Yes, the top nut (selector pivot) was loosened first and moved out of its rectangular groove, so that the bottom nut could be undone without moving the selector position - but it could have moved. I will be trying to re-calibrate it first thing in the morning now as per previous post.
Thanks, will let you know how I get on.Emon

SUCCESS
Robbie,
Yes! Instructions were clear and it worked first time after the adjustment. I have checked all gear lever positions and also made sure that during the adjustment the top "nut position" is not moved as D..Mikey warned. So she is driving fine and as in other posts the changing is so smooth.
Many thanks to you both - a true interactive and valuable forum. Emon

Mine done by stealers....but the b ds charged me for & changed out the whole gearchange quadrant mechanism.....this I still have & by my inspection there is nothing wrong with it....BREXIT - done properly.

Auto box selector
Thanks to this thread I have saved pounds. I had a very stiff shift and it kept slipping. I spent half an hour with the releasing oil and I have my dream machine back. It would have cost be a lot otherwise at a local garage. Thanks again..

Let me add another thanks for this posting.
My symptom was that sport mode / command shift would not engage. I was skeptical that this procedure would fix my problem because this is a mechanical part and the Sport mode / command shift is electronic. Also, my shift lever didn't feel stiff (and didn't feel noticeably different after replacing the parts for that matter). But this replacement seemed in the ballpark, good maintenance, and cheap.
Put in the new pivot last weekend, put some waterproof grease on the shaft, and now sport mode / command works! Perhaps I got lucky and jiggled some connection during R&R, but regardless, I'll post this success for purposes of thanking Mike and in case it might help somebody else.

My D3 lost drive the other day, and I didn't think much of it as it had only happened once.
However this morning it's lost drive every time I brake, which probably means the linkage needs freeing off.
Unfortunately this was on the way home from a trip to the docs where I've been diagnosed with a possible prolapsed disc(me not the D3) so I don't think I'll be up to this for a few days.

Managed to get myself enough underneath to soak the pivot in WD40 which appears to have sorted it until I can get the bits and get under there properly to change them.
Guy Salmon Pompey have all the parts in stock, which surprised me.

It has been said by wiser sages than me that WD40 works initially but dissolves any lubricant there and ends up worse than before. Best to use spray grease.

Oh yes, I'm not expecting it to last long, it's just all I had in the garage this afternoon.
It's horrible stuff really.

Makes a great fly killer when sprayed through a lighter.
