Cam belt and oil pump change - TDv6 2.7 05 plate

Hi guys,

My van belt is well over due on my 05 2.7 disco 3. It’s on 120k and still original belt🙄

I intend on changing this myself as I pretty handy even though I’ve never done one before. I intending on doing the oil pump whilst I’m at it. Looking at parts that I need to buy, do I just need to buy the belt or do I need to buy the belt with the kit so the pulleys get changed too? I got the locking kit but is there anything that I need to buy to get this job done as I would like everything there ready so I’m don’t start and then have to stop and wait for parts

You will need all the idlers including the tensioner so the kit is the way to go. Has the oil pump been changed? If you don't know you will have to pull the covers and check it. If its the original pump you will need to change it as well, given their enthusiastic tendency to snap at the tensioner mount destroying your engine.

In addition to the cam locking pins you will need the flywheel locking tool, and you will also need the fitting tool for the new pump oil seal if new pump being fitted. There is also the rear HPFP belt and tensioner, this not timed and no special tools needed other than small hands Smile Dayco are the OEM for the belt kit!

Finally, although the mileage is very low you should consider the water pump as well. I usually fit them after 150k, but yours has likely been there now for 15 years! The ancillaries drive belt is also worth doing but this can easily be done later without fuss.

Well, new oil pump means new oil seal on the crankshaft... tooling for that is important if you use the OEM Teflon lip seal , there is a expensive JRL tool for it, or from what i have read if you buy a Victor Reinz seal, it is included with the seal kit.. + the tool for presfitment in the oilpump... 1 mm deep that is...
(If you have a lathe, you can make one yourself)

And new crankshaft bolt in case of removal, and I’d need to be fixed with 100Nm + 90 degrees or 300Nm on later engines..

Undoing the viscous fan, makes the job a lot easier , so tooling for that?

+1 for the tensioner pulley’s (bearings) (go for the complete ones, while the steel pulleys tend to deform when replacing the bearings only) + new bolts..

You may already be aware but if you have bought one of the cheap timing belt locking tool kits you may find that the flywheel locking tool will require grinding down to fit the hole.

I had to do this and have read of lots of other people having to do the same, beats me why they cannot make it the right size after going to the trouble to make the tool!!

simply buy laser tools and it will fit

buy cheap chinese copies and you wil have this kind of problems

you get what you paid for

They do not seem to have allowed for the electro plating......it's just a case of removing the plating.

So I have ordered a set of tools for changing the cam belt. It includes the two pins for the camshafts and the tool with a round pin that fits into the hole in the flywheel.

The workshop manual shows an additional tool used for locking the flywheel to remove the crankshaft pulley bolt do I need this as well as I plan to remove the pulley to change the oil pump whilst I’m at it….

No, the "flywheel tool" you refer to is the crankshaft locking tool. Thumbs Up

PS. Original LR oil seal and you must renew the crankshaft bolt.

I guess maybe it’s designed to take the Torque of tightening the crankshaft pulley bolt….? Whereas the normal timing flywheel lock tool is not ?
