Auto pivot repair worked wonders. The vehicle is 5 years old and was slipping out of drive on cornering and also sometimes not engaging from stand still.
After reassembly, the first time I moved the gear lever I thought there was a problem, it was so easy. It had obviously been getting tighter and tighter.
When I disassembled it, it was totally seized. Very easy job to do, once I had found my ramps!
Thanks for your advice. Having previously done all my own maintenance, having bought the vehicle from new, I had got out of the habit.

Great post. One picture missing and wouldn't load, but still..! I've had this twice now, first time it was 'fixed' by a main stealer, but it happened again 8 months and 2,500 miles later, so I suspect that it was just freed off with WD40 or similar. Obviously at £85 WD40 has gone up a lot...l Anyway, after having intermittent problems then being stuck at traffic lights with no drive for a minute yesterday, I decided to buy all the bits, so if you want to buy all the fiddly bits, here's a list. The lot came to £13.62. :-
LLR012704 140308 Lever £2.96
LWYH000040 140503 Nut - flanged £0.42
LVYH500020 140504 Nut - Hex £0.42
LTYG000050 140506 Bolt £2.02
LTZT500040 140602 Bush £3.43
LTYF000050 140603 Washer - spring £2.63
Don't know what the second number is, maybe local bin location?
My local parts guy even provided an exploded drawing without being asked. Service! (will email a copy if anyone in need)Make the most of this life, you may not have a Landy or skis in the next one.

Thanks for the detailed guide Disco_Mikey.
Yet another expensive trip to the stealers avoided through the great advice on this Forum.
I haven't replaced the bush and hollow central piece that corrodes for now as I couldn't get to a parts centre today. Just stripped the whole thing down, cleaned it all up and applied lots of bike chain grease.
As others have mentioned I had forgotten how smooth and free the shift lever was until I had sorted out the seized pivot. Will see how it goes on and at the first sign of the problem returning I will order up new parts.
So far through Disco3 I have learnt how to:
Fix the rear tailgate release when the micky mouse cable end breaks.
Sort out simultaneous total dashboard Xmas tree effect, going into limp home mode and suspension lowering to access height, just by replacing a rear stop/tail bulb The most bizarre fault to date.
Change the front pads and sensors for a fraction of main dealer price.
Fix the slipping gearbox fault that I initially thought was going to end up with worst case scenario of a massive bill for a new auto box.
Any bids for the next common fault that will hit us and that I am currently oblivious to?

Excellent guide, thanks,
I just started to have the gear select problem a couple of days ago, after selecting "drive" it sometimes slipped into neutral, selecting "sport" helped but it started jumping to neutral sometimes after hitting a bump in the road or if I slightly glanced the gear shift.
I came across this forum after suffering the EGR valve problem on my previous Disco 3 but too late as the garage had already stripped my turbo needlessly, assuming this was the problem and charged for two days labour.
So I went straight to the forum again and quickly found the cause of this one but as it was still in warranty I called the "stealer" to let him do it. I explained the cause but they disagreed with me and said they had never heard of that problem happening before?
As they were an hour away and had no courtesy car available I decided to tackle it myself.
Out with the ramps and socket set, mine obviously wasn't that bad as I had it all disconnected in ten minuets and it wasn't too badly corroded, cleaned up the bits, reinstalled and was back driving in twenty minuets, gear select working like new with a decided "clunk" when selecting each gear which I didn't notice before.
If I ever buy another new Disco, Im going to offer them several grand less than their best cash price, take it without the warranty and do the repairs myself.
Excellent forum, thanks again.

Just wanted to add my thanks for this advice. Local garage carried out the work for me for £50 and the gear shift is like new.

Plus another big thank you.
Purchased my Disco just over a year ago, bought at 3 years and 45k.
Gear shifter had always been a bit heavy to pull between gears, but noticed a couple of weeks ago (51k) that it was really heavy. looked at the posts on this thread and with a little knowledge popped into my local LR dealer and ordered the parts, which cost me about £14.
A week ago I got the 'slips' in drive and reverse, so knew you guys were onto something. Spent just over an hour today, following the guide, this was a very easy job to do.
Gear shifter now moves very slick - huge difference -

Gears started jumping out of drive last week........Dealer did this job 2 years ago so it appears to last a couple of years before it siezes up again......
The bolt was indeed siezed on to the cable end so I replaced the lever arm, bush insert, washer and nut, and didnt need to worry about getting the bolt in the same place on the cable.....total time 1 hour....
cost about £10...... gear stick is slick once more........
to Disco Mikey again......

Hi All,
NEED URGENT HELP. Had the same seizure problem and changed the parts as instructed today, easy job. HOWEVER now it will not start or let me take the key out!! It shows "command shift selected" on info display and gear level on P position, has this anything to do with the vehicle not starting? It is obviously in some logic state, how do I get out of it?
I had disconnected the battery so that the key would be released which it did, but on trying to start it has again "grabbed" the key and still will not start!
I am truly stranded Emon

Looks like the linkage has moved slightly from where it should be. Hopefully you marked the original position so undo it all and reposition it. The failure to start is a safety feature to stop you starting in gear.Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948

Robbie,
Many thanks for the post. I thought I had put the cable back within a mm or so of the mark, will try to realign as suggested (after tea!) from scratch. Work on Monday, so will need to have this cracked by tomorrow latest.Emon

I hope you slackened the nut on the gearbox selector before the nut on the cable...
I have seen it pull the rod inside the box out of the slot it runs in, and wouldnt restart as the g/box thought it was in gear...
It then needs the sump off, to refitMy D3 Build Thread
