I've dropped a b*llock and tightened the top nut first...."clunck" in the gear box, so assume I have twisted the shuttle valve out of the valve block!?
Anybody know what the implications of this are?
Can I move the car? I assume it is now locked in Park?
Need to get it on a trailer somehow...
Any advice much appreciated.
Ta!

Cheers Mikey!
Managed to reset everything and reassembled the lever etc... I can select neutral so able to roll it onto a trailer a take it to my local Indy... Leave it to the pro’s; I’ll go back to my day job!

A big thank you to Disco_Mikey for this thread.
Hadn't noticed the gear shift getting any stiffer, but then I noticed it wouldn't engage D without a far thump on the gear lever. Then popping out of gear mostly at slow speed while braking, not great when you find yourself half way across a junction with no drive. Eventually couldn't engage D, and one day at all, until I "slammed" the lever back, not good mechanical empathy.
Anyhow after a bit of searching around, found this great thread. Contemplated servicing and cleaning up the parts, but so cheap, ended up ordering the parts from John Craddock for £32 - job done. I can't believe how slick the gear shift is now, amazing you don't notice it getting stiffer
I didn't change the bolt cable connector despite ordering them. It was well seized on the cable, so some copper slip on the thread and left it firmly in place.
Another job done with help from disco3
Thanks again Disco_Mikey

Thanks everyone! Especially you Disco_Mikey! Slipping out of gear while in drive was disconcerting. Such an elegantly effective 15 min fix! I was able to loosen the pivot with penetrating oil and a spanner until I could rotate it freely with my fingers. I see no need for me to order a replacement. I also noticed it's now much easier to shift in the cockpit.
A couple of notes...
1. Hold the lever while you unscrew the nuts, or you might shift into reverse and roll (good thing I had the P-brake on).
2. The spring washer goes between the cable and the lever. I saw a "how to" video where they mistakenly put it between the nut and the lever.
3. You can adjust the cable according to 307-05B External Controls in the manual... Before tightening the pivot, push the lever forward (towards park) and let go, then pull the cable aft and let go. They settle into their proper place. This helps, as I was too eager and smeared the marking paint before it dried.

I'm just gonna take the under tray off and lube it with WD40 PTFE lubricant spray as I have no issue as yet 👍

I didnt even realise my lever was getting stiff, so thought I'd check as mine is an 05, yup right on the verge of rusting solid, just completed this following the excellent guide, smooth as silk, result, now all I need is to find a gearbox undertray as mine was missing

Thanks for the guide, sprayed the link with WD40 to loosen things off then ordered the parts. After an hour so the lever started to behave itself. Set about the task this morning, the job took 45 minutes. Thanks so much, it works a treat.

Yet another happy Disco owner. Big thanks to Disco-Micky and other subscribers to this post. My 09, D3, 137k, developed these exact symptoms over a two week period. After a little trawling through the forum came across this remedy - took about an hour just taking my time and methodically following the advice - unbelievable that such a small nut/bush, when seized up, can have such a detrimental effect on the gearbox functionality - also learnt that there is a Sports mode which l was unaware of 👍 learn something new every time l read through these pages.

Just give it a spray of good quality grease once a year to keep it in good condition. Andrew

Issue with my autobox,
I have noticed when stopping the car and moving the gear selector from Drive to Park, then switching the engine off I cannot remove the ignition key and the selector is stuck in Park, if I restart the car and move through the gears a couple of times then leave the selector in Park and switch off the engine I can then remove the ignition key, I have not had any issues with loss of drive like others have, I will get the selector cable kit to change the following
LR012704 Lever
TZT500040 Bush
TYG000050 Bolt
WYH000040 Flanged Nut
TYF000060 Spring Washer
LVYH500020 140504 Nut
has anyone had the exact same issue? D3 4.4 V8 2005 sadly now gone
Freelander 2 i6 HSE now gone was a very good 4x4

Yes thats the most common issue.
You dont need to spend loads of money, quite ofter the pivot will clean up ok with a wire brush and some good quality grease Andrew

I had a similar intermittent issue with the key not releasing, even though the shift lever felt fine when moving through the gears from park to drive.
I just removed the linkage, stripped it and re-greased it all, there's not much to it to be honest. Worked fine afterwards and the problem has never reoccurred . 2005 TDV6 SE Auto

thanks for the replies, I have just removed the cover, noticed 4 bolts not 6 holding it on, all the parts except the lever looked to be recently replaced. I bought the D3 in May 21, there was no debris on the bush / flanged nut area, so I gave the parts a soaking of WD40 afterwards a spray coating of grease,
I will leave over night and check, I had already ordered a complete kit so may end up using that if the grease fails. D3 4.4 V8 2005 sadly now gone
