Just done this wee job today, it's makes it like a new gearbox smooth as.

One problem I incountered was where does the big brass type washer go?

I've made disco_mikey's original post into a PDF for ease of giving it to my local independent. The PDF is here if anyone wants it.

All credit to disco_mikey, EdF and Robbie and thanks to all who contributed to this very helpful thread.

fouling relay-my experience

thanks very much Disco_Mikey for your excellent instructions. My gear selection was getting increasingly worse (except no jumping out of gear around corners) so having read your description of the issue I was ready to temporarly lubricate the linkage and order the parts.

Taking off the gearbox cover I noticed that a previous LR dipstick mechanic (only previously serviced by them) had managed to loose one bolt & strip another, anyway to my delight I found the culprit. Possibly the same dipstick mechanic had broken off a nearby relay from its housing (or the housing had rusted) either way the relay assembly had worked it's way right into the gear slection pivot mechanism and was fouling it. I cable tied the relay out of the way, lubed the linkages and everything is OK again. JD!!!

No, this is for auto only. Manual linkage is on the top of the gearbox

So today I greased mine today.
Now I've never posted this comment before just I case I was mistaken...
But why is my cable going to my linkage coming in from the right
But on disco Mikeys its coming in from the left??
I thought I got the picture orientation mixed up, but today I had a propper look and everything is identical even down to the roushed up heat cloth on the exhaust above...

No I didn't take a pic, as I didn't really think to do so.. Neutral

Looking at your picture number 1 my cable with black blob thing on it is defiantly coming from the right on my car, by the filter. As I was wary of spraying to much grease into the blob thing as it had what looked like springs and an electrical multiplug by it ...

If it wasn't dark I'd go out n take a pic

Looking from the rear of the car towards the front ....

The 1st picture is correct. It comes in from the rear of the gearbox, and points forward...
