I'd been having a slight problem with a somewhat rough selector on my 05 D3 and thought it was the bush at the gear box lever that had seized so proceeded to fit new one.
Once the heat shield was off I discovered the cause of the rough selector was that when the mechanic had been reprogramming the box and topping up the fluid he must have dislodged the cable from its support bracket and it was no longer running straight and smooth. It was just a matter of resetting the cable to fix it, but I decided that as I had the parts I would fit them and do the cable adjustment.
Basically you proceed as in the details at the start of this post and when the new lever is fitted to the gear box rather than working to some mark made on the cable, leave the clamp bolt loose and push the lever fully forward and let it go, it will return to where it needs to be. Ensure the gear shift/lever is in P then from below push the end of the cable back and let go (it may not move). Now tighten the clamp with a 13mm socket and 21mm spanner. Next check that the engine will only start in P & N but not in D or R. The shifter is now reset.
Everything now working well.

Well after driving home Thursday holding the gear lever in drive I thought it was time to change out the parts mentioned! I had the usual symptoms been brewing for a few weeks so had already been looking on this forum for pointers, and as the symptoms matched thought it would be wise!!
I dropped the tray and lubed the pivot Thursday and the difference was amazing - I thought driving on Friday it was like a new one! But I bought the parts anyway as £20 is a good investment as far as I am concerned, a couple of hours this morning and the difference is unbelievable - it has never been that good since I owned the car!! Well chuffed!!!!!!!! and reiterate thanks for the 'How to' guide!
Seems like it is a common problem, when I rang thru to the main dealer the parts bod said they just take them apart and clean them up rather than replace the bits!!!! Yes the old parts taken off could have been cleaned up but why bother!! They will be cleaned up and thrown in the emergency spares box now but the bush was so tight in the housing I could hardly turn it with a socket and ratchet on it!!
Pic of new and old bits (Just 'cause)
(Note spring washer missing from the above pic!)
Old bits (Now emergency spares!!!!) as above removed from Car! You cant tell but that bush took some persuading to come out of the housing - well stiff!!
What annoys me is that I have just paid the main dealer for the BIG service which cost an arm and a leg - why didnt they go in then and at the very least give it a squirt of lub and chase it out with some spray grease!! Bad design but if they were more proactive most wouldn't even notice it!!
Anyway all went well and with a whisky in hand now all is well with the world of D3's once again
Until next time..................!Sanity is just a form of madness favoured by the masses
The other day, whilst sharp turning left, drive went and the revs rose. Foot off accelerator and a second later drive was resumed. I checked on this forum as usual for a reason and lo and behold here it is!
I removed the plastic protection shield and the corrosion on the bolt and bush was obvious, so I sprayed with penetrating Oil and immediately the difference in gear shift ease was apparent. A part fix until the new parts arrive tomorrow.
An up date on the prices (plus VAT) of the bits:
LR012704 Lever £3.58
TZT500040 Bush £4.59
TYG000050 Bolt £2.70
TYF000060 Washer Spring £3.69
WYH000040 Nut Flanged £0.54
VYH500020 Nut Hex £0.74
OK not bank busting but still quite a price increase on the original prices, even with low inflation JLR make ever increasing profits!
I'm sure if these prices aren't correct TLO will post the correct ones.
A question I have that could be related is that a few days prior to the loss of drive the parking sensors threw a wobbly a couple of times.
I did a check on one wobbly moment and I couldn't hear the 'tick - tick' from the sensors front or rear.
So no one sensor at fault as even though you have the constant fault beep, the non faulty sensors still 'tick' so you can work out which one has failed.
So I am wondering if the semi seized lever bush is the cause of the parking sensor malfunction?
I notice that Disco-Mikey photos don't have an electrical connection close to the lever.
Could it be that his 'subject' did not have parking sensors?
If it did what is that electrical connector for?
If anybody else has a reason for parking sensors to malfunction please feel free to elaborate.

Can I add my thanks to everyone else's.
I'd noticed the shifter was getting a bit stiffer, yesterday it popped out of drive at a junction, it went straight back in.
Thought I'd have a quick look on here for a potential solution and found this thread.
I've just used ptfe lube spray and spray grease until I get the parts - but it feels brand new again - what a difference.
Thanks again

mine has just gone for the second time in 5 years. So there you go. its becoming a serviceable item. Maybe it should be replaced at the 105,000 mark along with the belts and brake hoses

£290.14+VAT
they did send me a lovely little u tube clip of the health check items including this, their price must include cost of broadcasting rights !!

Need to give mine a lube today, had same symptoms this week and shift from Park is getting really clunky.
Will have to get a full set of bits on order - it seems to be a very common thing now, I wonder if Steve (BoG) has a set made up ?
Just checked - full kit £13.79 - order incoming

I had to cut the lower nut off as it was seized that badly it would not budge. Tried everything before I resorted to cutting. Even when I cut the nut off it still needed persuasion.

Re my previous post - It was the pivot lever causing the problem - lots of corrosion and it was seized. Took it up to my local specialist this morning with the parts he was very sceptical that this would fix the issue but I said can you change them anyway because disco3 forum says this what it is. Anyway went up to collect it and he was eating his words and said it was the pivot lever after all, he's been working on disco's for years and it's the first time he has seen this! I thought the gear lever wasn't stiff but looks like it was as it now moves much more easily I guess it must of got stiffer over time and I hadn't noticed it.
Anyway a big thank you once again to disco3 and this thread
Ps also noticed that if I moved the gear lever slightly forward (1mm or so) when in drive it would slip into neutral - now doesn't do this2005 HSE TDV6 in Bonatti Grey
