trivial job - hardest bit was getting the passenger side bolts off the protection tray - car was parked a bit close to the fence
Gear selection feels just byoooootiful and precise now - thanks to Disco Mikey Steve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)

Thanks for posting this fix! It is easy, cheap and very important
I found a "kit" on ebay with all the parts, in case your dealer is out of stock.

as said before I had to do a quick fix - spayed WD40 into the joint- actuated it a few times with gear lever & it 'popped' free ......chased the WD40 out with spray grease. Not the best way but seems to have worked for now until I get a kit. 2007 TDV6 HSE 'Silver Lady'. With 'free' privacy glass LOL.

just done this, excellent guide cheers.
but now car seems a bit slow to engage? i put it back exactly where it was on the rod, would it be worth following the guide on page 6 to reset positioning?

The reset is easy, so it couldn't hurt to try it. If the selector is moving crisply and snapping into place, but then gear engagement is slow, it sounds like it could be some other issue. Hope the reset works for you.

Yet another thank you. After a few weeks of jumping out of gear on corners, then intermittently being unable to select drive, I reckoned some expensive gear problem was brewing. But no, found this thread, bought the bits and changed them out this morning. Good slap of copper grease for peace of mind and many more miles of happy discoing.

Odd isn't it how a part that is constantly in use can suddenly develop
restricted movement .went to work in mine last Saturday no problem
Selected D to come home after my shift and the car rolled backwards (parked on an incLine.) .
On the journey home no problem.Didn't use the car till Monday then got all the symptoms intermittent
drive in D and R and no drive after Sharp bends . Took a look at the car Mon night no fault codes
So assumed mechanical fault .found this thread and just to confirm pivot seized .
Fitted the new parts and all is at peace in my world again
Thanks Mike You're not afraid of the dark are you ?

Wow, put a new linkage on my D3 this morning as my gear lever was very stiff and jumping out of drive on corners. The 'D' drive symbol would also dissappear when braking!
The problems have all gone now. The tippex is a good idea, but if like mine the rod/cable has rust on it from the anchor part it will need a good polish up so you will loose your marks. I measured from the end of the rod to the rod clamp at 43mm so knew where to put it afterwards. Cheers again all!

Thanks chaps for another great thread. When I picked my D3 up from MoT yesterday, they mentioned the shift was heavier than most, but I guess it was a gradual change so I hadn't noticed. Off on a family trip tomorrow am so bad timing as usual, but following this thread I've freed it and lubed as a stop-gap until we get home.
Thanks again for all the info/advice, it's much appreciated
