Thanks, I was thinking that would be the only sensible option. My garage have lubed it all up for me so hopefully I will see some improvement although only deferring the inevitable and will have to get it looked at.

A Big thanks to Disco_Mikey for this fix
Had the same problem of no drive, thought I was going to land a large bill to fix the gearbox, but just £10 and 30 minutes and it was all sorted. Now a silky smooth gear selector - Brilliant

mine went while on holiday in it but i had trouble getting park and reverse the selector said p but the dash had nothing and when that happened you either can't take the key out or start the engine. I was worried it was something i had done while fitting the fridge. Sadly i haven't got time to do it at the momen't so booked it in to dealer £133. Not impressed at the price but it feels so much better. They Did replace the fuel filler flap lock for free while it was in there.

I've made disco_mikey's original post into a PDF for ease of giving it to my local independent. The PDF is here if anyone wants it.

A few weeks back I had a problem getting the vehicle into drive. This was whilst in a traffic jam so when traffic moved I didn't. However it was just once and I ignored it when it didn't come back, until yesterday!!!
On a few occasions whilst driving around town to different places including the filling station, it just wouldn't engage drive or even dropped out of drive.
So today since I had the day off I thought I had better see if I could see what the problem was. A quick search found this thread and the first description and pictures were enough for me to get the spanners out. About an hour later I am writing this just to thank the original poster for the thread. It's a simple job and the shift is so much better now. I didn't change any parts as I think new ones will go the same way anyway. So just cleaned and lubed the existing bits which looked like all they needed anyway.
If your shift lever isn't silky smooth with a positive action it's probably worth cleaning things now up before they get worse.

Thanks for the write up Disco Mikey!
I did this today as a little precautionary sharpening of the spear , and although I didn't have a noticeable issue, I got peace of mind and a glorious helping of Butter-like shifting action on the selector.
Love it, thanks again.

Well mine finally went last monday - just 10 minutes after getting it back from the garage having had a full set of pads/discs fitted for the thick end of 500 notes
Fortunately it happened outside my house but I was parked just past it to answer the phone. So I was able to make a one shot reverse onto the drive (sweaty moment as there was NO chance for two goes at it with no forward drive available) and a quick phone call to TLO
and the bits are sat in my kitchen to be fitted tomorrow morning (weather permitting) Steve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)
