Just a quick question.
As i have my FBH controller fed from my auxillary battery it won't switch off due to the power dip.
Could this cause any damage to the controller or the FBH or car, if i forget to switch it of when i start the car?
What would you think?

As reassurance, I have a non-BAS kit on mine (as per the wiki on here) and I run the FBH twice a day in the winter and the car only does 1.5 miles runs on the journey to the station most days and there is no issue with battery power. As long as your battery is ok it will run the FBH happily with minimal charging.
I would say that the best bit is GSM actuation - it means when I get on the train I can activate it and the car is warm when I get to the car park 40 mins later Tony

Hi
The FBHIC module will automaticlly switch off your FBH when the car starts to charge your main battery as it sees the voltage rise from the charging alternator.
The voltage data used comes direct from the FBH into the FBHIC module so since your FBH is powered from your main battery this is what it is sensing, not your second battery. Therefore if the voltage drops or rises on your main battery while the FBH is running the FBHIC will again turn the FBH off automaticlly
THOUGH I STRONGLY ADVISE YOU CONNECT THE FBHIC MODULE TO THE MAIN BATTERY TO SAVE PROBLEMS WITH VOLTAGE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE 2. also their is actually no point or real gain for you connecting the FBHIC module to the spare battery as the module only takes about 50ma of current which is less than an LED bulb.

Hi Pete, understood.
The only reason i had to wire the FBHIC from my 2nd battery was that it is on the same side as my FBH. (lhd)
Is the factory setting from the FBHIC so that it will switch off when the engine is started? Or do i have to set it?
The reason i ask is that it seems that the FBH keep running when engine is started and i thought it was because of the setup i have.

Hi
Yes the factory setting is to switch of the fbh when the engine is started.
can you not power the FBHIC from the main battery wire that goes into your split charge relay ? is that not near the module located in your fbh side of the car ?
Well, ordered Kit 1 from Pete on Wednesday, it was delivered yesterday and I fitted it this morning. Because I have painful arthritis in both wrists and all fingers doing fiddly stuff like this is difficult. Fitting the controller was easy but in doing so my clumsy hands broke the wire going into pin7. Pete was great, he reassured me that I could still use the fbh as long as I insulated the broken wire. The controller worked perfectly and will be great for me on cold mornings when my hands get stiff and painful. It was so good to deal with someone who has patience with idiot customers and wants to make sure the customer is happy with the product so a huge thank you to Pete - he's not only a technical genius but a very nice and genuine guy as well

Within 10 minutes of the post man delivering it this morn i had it fitted If you can snip a wire and twist 2 togeather and undo two easy to reach nuts thats all their is to it. Mine started first time and only smoked for 3 mins then was clear. I was expecting loads of smoke how come their was none? Well chuffed. Bit expensive but i think it will be worth its weight in Gold this winter. Can recomend it Ps i will add propper conecters in future. I already had the Red wire their so was easy. Would only add another 10 mins to the job if the Red wire wasn't their to remove the blank from the plug EDIT= mine fired up accidently twice when i was clearing tools away becuse the remote activated whilst in my pocket so be carefull of that

Since the temperatures have been dropping a bit, I have been running the FBH the last couple morning for the full 30min cycle. In my Disco the FBH warms the engine temp after these 30min up to this level:

When I start the car it's actually ab bit lower than on the above photo. I took the photo a couple of hundreds meters later. Should the temperature not be higher after a full 30min? It has been only 6C this morning, so not even that cold. Is there a more exact way to check the engine temp (e.g. secret diagnostic menu like in BMWs)?
If the weather gets proper cold (sub zero) I might have to try out the 45min setting.
Anyway great piece of kit. Can't wait to try it out when it's really freezing outside with the 45min setting.
@Pete: Is it possible to order a spare remote/blip? I think I would feel better if I had one in case this one gets lost or breaks.

Hi
The temprature you are getting after 30 mins in normal for any FBH running considering the amount of water you have to heat, please also remember the final temprature will vary slightly from day to day depending on how cold your coolant is when you start the heater. Id personally use 45 mins for the colder weeks/months and then switch back to 30 mins wwhen the morning temps startrising again.
Switch picture below for DIP1 if you need it for the 45 min setting.

Ok, decided 30 minutes is not really hacking it. Going to go for 45 minutes as I can I vary the time downwards by just triggering it later. In fact now I have got used to it the 30min setting is pretty redundant and perhaps they should be set at 45 minutes as standard.
I am probably a little dense but does the dip picture above show the correct settings required for 45 minutes (all dips in line) or is the picture just to remind me where the dip switches are?
My final comment is that it really needs an visible indicator that the RF plip has got through as a standard feature. I am finding myself hanging around to make sure the command has got through and the thing is starting to run. Still think it's great though!Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948

Hi Robbie, you have done the typical man thing and not read the PDF
The dip switches above are all set as default EG 30 mins , you will need to turn on dip 1 to make it 45mins. When you open the box you will see them all in default setting as per the picture above. I dont want to add 45 mins as standard because 90% of customers may only require 30mins to take the chill off or want to conserve Diesel so i best thought for non standard applications the customer can switch the setting dip if they require more time.

off: run time is 30 minutes
on: run time is 45 minutes
Their is a visible indicator showing the RF has got through, its the LED on the case
As shown in the pdf the LED will be solid green when the fbh is working, if not then the FBHIC will be in (normal OFF/Idle state) just flashing green every 15 seconds.
If you require even more of an indication you can also use the SIR/AUX pad on the pcb controlled by Dip 2 if you wish, and add your own Light/Buzzer or what ever you wish. (see quote below for functionality)
Adding extra external components at build will rase the cost of the kit and also the simplicity of fitting of the kit. so again we left this as a customer upgrade option for the people who need it most.

off: sir/aux line grounded briefly twice when FBH is started and once when it stops, intended for controlling an external buzzer or bleeper.
on: sir/aux line will be grounded for 5 minutes at the end of a timed run, provided that the car voltage is above 10.2 volts AND the temperature before the run was 3 deg C or less, intended for a circuit to control EG heated front screen via suitable (not supplied) relay and wireing.
You can use a small LED/Bulb or Buzzer and the AUX line will provide you a 5A MAX GND trigger to activate it.

Ordered intelligent controller Monday lunchtime from Pete, it arrived this morning! Top service Fitted this evening in just a few minutes. No problems swopping terminal in plug. Fbh started first time and ran for the full 30 mins, very happy! I don't think i've ever done a job on the D3 before that didn't involve a degree of cursing! A great piece of kit!
