Diff problems

Can you please help? The revs on my Disco3 is also going up, bot no movement. The propshaft is turning but thats all. A workshop the cv boot rubbers and diff oil seal. they also put new oil in diff as well as 100ml prolong. After my trip of 800km my disco is stranded. Could it be the prolong in the diff or do I need a new diff?

Just bought a very high milage D3 Auto from a family friend who bought it new... He's not at all a car person so obviously hadn't noticed the occassional judder and fluctuating revs (by about 200 rpm) while travelling 70mph up a hill. I'm guessing the box is slipping...or is fluctuating revs normal on these an autos?

So my plan of action is to get a glycol test. If there's no cross contamination could I assume it needs a good flush as it's never had one before (at 170K miles). The Dr Tranny option sounds good...

If it is a leaking rad what kind of job is it to sort it out?

Do the test and see if the radiator has leaked coolant into the ATF. If the problem is water in the ATF and the damage is minor the Dr Tranny may well reverse the contamination of the friction material. You may need to add the Dr Tranny AFTER replacing the AT fluid as new fluid does not repair the damage to the friction material.

Two options if rad is leaking - replacement rad, or, blank off the ATF pipes in the rad and fit a separate cooler. Latter is much quicker. Plenty of threads on the pros and cons of each approach.
 2005, TDV6 S, Auto, 190k miles, owned from new, V8 Brake Upgrade, Nancom Evo, RLD protector, BAS EGR blanking & Remap, separate ATF cooler, changing all the fluids ahead of time.

Im going to start off by admitting that I am both blonde and female so please, laymans terms!!

My heap of Censored Disco 3 affectionately known as Bertha has been having a few medical issues of late and has had a lot of money spent on her, most recently she has developed this "Judder" that you all seem to be referring to, it seems to be a low revs and only occasionally (Couple of times max a journey) which is a worry as my other half seems to think the gear box is knackered and that Bertha needs to go to the scrap heap in the sky!!

Would it be best to try this Dr Tranny Method first and see if that cures all and if so would one of you lovely, peeps please post in VERY simple terms how to do this (Pictures would be good) Wink

I guess the simple answer is yes, it's worth a try (worked for me).

Is other half able to use a screwdriver ?? If so, job almost done as it is as simple as pie and should only take 10 mins. The only other thing you will need is a syringe or similar to remove some of the existing fluid if there's not enough room for the Dr. T.

There are pictures about on here - if I find them before someone else does, I'll post the link.

Once done, prepare to be amazed Thumbs Up

Steve....... I think you have nearly restored my faith in Bertha - Seriously I LOVE my car but by god its costing me a fortune!!

I look forward to the link and being amazed Very Happy and also to not being so very worried that the juddering is something more serious and going to end up costing me MORE money - seriously in the last 2 weeks I have already spent £1100 on it and on top of that it needs 2 new lower suspension arms on the front (One each side obviously) and something else on the back of the car (Had glazed over by the point that the mechanic was telling me this............)

Great news. Did the ATF show any water/glycol contamination?

Because of the mileage / value of my car and the fact I was going on holiday with the car the next day I had just one sachet (of the two I bought) added. My plan was to then get the test and the oil changed at a later date but I may as well not bother now until it starts slipping again...which it might not hopefully!

Getting the oil changed with the correct oil and filters is very expensive! The oil costs around £250 alone.

...so...Dr Tranny works pretty well but there's still a tiny bit of judder around 2000 rpm in 3rd auto gear (I think). I've booked it in for new oil and all genuine filters - the LR specialist said that would almost certainly cure the problem.

He said the radiator issue was very rare indeed and if coolant were in the gearbox it would be obvious and most likely oil would go into the coolant too - you could see this in the header tank etc.

So is it obvious when the rad is cross contaminating - can you see evidence in the coolant or auto oil?

They want £395 all in for the change - which I think is good VFM.

I popped into my local LR dealer and asked them about the coolant in the oil issue and they said it was extremely rare and the likely cause of judder (in my case) was oil which should have been changed at 150K.

Obviously there may be many reasons for this problem but the failing radiator one doesn't appear to be common.

The water in oil doesn't happen that often - but it has been known to happen on many cars, not just Land Rovers.

The oil is long life - but depends what sort of life it has had - I would think 80k miles is probably more realistic for a full oil change (Mega flush or similar) - its not a huge amount of money in the scheme of things to get done.

Sodding Land Rovers......knew my D3 was cheap for a reason but couldn't put my finger on it till now....

Have owned the car for 3 days and 200 miles. Driving home this afternoon in town i noticed a noise. Round about the 2000 rpm mark, there's a juddering noise from under the car. Best way to describe it is the noise a Disco 2's air compressor makes when it levels the car up. So knowing what was coming next, i found the local steep hill, which i drove the car up on the test drive. Sure enough its was juddering, revs up and down etc etc. Exactly what is described in this thread........

So back tot he garage it goes tomorrow. With regard to Dr Tranny, is it a permanent fix?.

I think the Dr Tranny can buy you time, perhaps 25k miles. At the end, the underlying issue my come back and more action required to TC or transmission. I suspect regular ATF changes at say 90k will do more to extend life of the TC, ATF and transmission. But others may now have longer term feedback on Dr Tranny.
