I, ve replaced the handbrake shoes twice so far and found this guide invalueable. Great job.
I always struggle to get the large spring in place. This time I found an easier way which may help. Sequence as follows. Attach actuator cable to the shoe, insert one end of the large spring into this shoe, attach this shoe to the back plate, attach other shoe to the large spring. Lever the other shoe into place onto the seat, pull out from the unattached end and insert the spacer, having tie rapped the spring in place as suggested in the guide. Assemble rest as suggested in the guide. Hard to explain but hope that makes sense.

Aftermarket parking brake shoe problems |
|
Hi,
I am completing changing my rear brakes, shoes, disks and pads.
Things went fairly well once I got the countersunk screws out, with the exception of the parking brake shoes.
The shoes are badged Pagit, and were a total pain in the arris., I hope this will help anyone else using these, the problems sound trivial with hind sight but took a while to sort out.
The problems.
1
The slot in the operating arm for the brake cable is not wide enough for the swaged cable end, needs a small round file and vise.
2
After fitting the shoes they were clearly expanded partly so the disk wont go over them.
The cause was the clamp for the wedge expander it a ribbed stamped crank offset, the offset was not gripping the wedge allowing it to work forward whilst fitting.
Solved by holding the clamp in the vise up to the offset and applying gentle force with a small lump hammer to increase the offset.
3
Once assembled the shoes were tight against the drum over 40nm on the nut.
The lining surface was rivelled ,took several fitting and removing the disk and removing the high spots with a file.
Still only managed seven clicks on the adjuster.
How important is the 8 clicks, if you look at the expander screw pitch I recon a full turn is about 20thou.
each click is only a couple of thou on the length ,that's fine tolerances for brake shoes.

Ian,
Thanks your bible was brilliant for doing the front and rear discs and pads which went a treat Got a problem with the parking brake shoes dragging even with the adjuster fully wound in. I only got to six clicks from closed when 60nm was achieved. Does the big nut on the end of the brake back plate give you any adjustment.
Any ideas anyone

Hi All,
After the hastle with the aftermarket shoes binding with the adjuster fully in after fitting.
With contact only on high spots. I noticed after about 1000 miles the actuator was running a long time to apply the brake, with a spring stretching graunch / squeak.
Checked the adjustment and got 20 clicks to 60NM.
Re adjusted to 8 clicks as per Bodsys Bible and perfect now.
Would advise checking the adjustment shortly after fitting if the shoes are tight, I suspect I was not far from jamming the actuator.

Which Combination works best IE longest lasting. |
|
Looking for the best combination of break pads and roters. Is it worth it to use EBC pads and roters if so which ones? The idea is that if I use better pads I won't have to change them as much.
Thanks, Matt

I'm looking forward (if that's the right way to look at it) to testing out the bible again this coming weekend.
I got an advisory on front discs and pads from the MOT back in April, and I've just started to get a an occasional bong and intermittent warning light so I'm presuming the sensor is telling me it's time to sort them out.
