It might be a software issue, but I suspect (admittedly with no evidence) that it’s a hardware limitation to which they are continually attempting to apply a software workaround.2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2

starting to think about replacing our D4 which is approaching its seventh birthday.
Wife has announced she hates the look of the D5 and has even looked at the dimensions and told me that the D5 is 11cm lower in height than the D4 and ergo the driving position won't be as high.....which is a major "like" on the D4 for her....
Anybody able to confirm if there is a difference in height behind the wheel as well as on the exterior ?

Confirming
Standard height D4 = 1882mm
Standard height D5 = 1888mm
As someone who has driven 2 D3's, 2 D4's and now a D5 every day don't believe everything you hear or read ...there's nothing wrong with the driving position at all

My wife is the same, can't get over it's looks and it's not just the back end, so many of the proportions are just wrong. I have tried to talk myself into the D5 but just cannot.
Go and look at the XC90, I have and it is a very interesting car. My D4 is newer than your's so I am going to wait a couple of years and see if other products come out. The new Defender might work but otherwise it's the Volvo as it's the only other proper seven seat option unless you look at the Merc GLS but that is off the scale ££ wise.2014MY Discovery

As a 5ft 7 D4 driver of the female persuasion, I would definitely say that front/back visibility when driving is not so great in the D5. The D5 lot of car to drive without all the cameras/electrickery and you felt claustrophobic without a panoramic roof. I love my D4 and much prefer the driving position.
As far as looks go, the new Toureg/Tiguans is on the money for me. Not sure about 4wd capacity. Not looked into that. All other cars seem to behave like crabs in the snow - not so much forward, more like sideways action
As previously stated, not sure where we will go when our D4 has to go ... even had a quick look at the new electric Jag last weekend as a potential 'one day'. It looks lovely, boot not so great, but with a shoehorn the dogs would definitely be able to get in. 270 miles / charge and a real competitor against the Tesla.
Mr Pollski is wanting a Velar ... I would not resist in the slightest if one furnished our driveway. I have a feeling the new Defender will be a mix of Noddy car meets Tonka toy.My16 HSE Landmark - 2016 - Current. Indus Silver

Due to the terrible time that I was having with my Full Fat in sick bay recently, I went and looked at a XC90.
There are typically brilliant Volvo seats, it's handsome (by current standards), the interior is light and airy and there's a good view out. The space and practicality of the back is a big improvement on the D5, although not as good as the '4. Though they've ditched their own split tailgate, at least there's no gimmicky electric plank bang in the way
It makes a brilliant MPV in an SUV style body. What turned me off was the lack of anything over 1969cc, the 450mm wading height, the lack of proper 4 wheel drive capability, the 60,000 mile only warranty and poor potential fuel consumption of the (realistic 25 mile range, FWD only when the electricity's gone, low to mid 20's on petrol only) "twin engine" 2.0 petrol variant. Although, at least under the current testing regime, it must be a brilliant at BiK tax avoidance 2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2

....Can’t beleave the tail gate doesn’t injure more owners!
And spoke to a D5 owner who hated it yesterday (he’d had several 3’s and 4’s) found the door depth to be a real pain on sites and had trimmed the corners or the tail gate!
Having just spent another five weeks (and 3,500 miles) driving various td6 D5's over the last 6 weeks, there have been lots of occasions where I've had to warn people, while standing at the back of the car, of the lethal corners and it's not been safe to leave the tailgate open and unattended for the dog's wellbeing. Hack sawing the corners of the tailgate is a radical long term solution, but probably essential to avoid highly inconvenient death and injury
Although it was pretty horrible to drive, I can't say that I've noticed any problem with the depth of the doors though 2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2

The shiny surfaces certainly show/gather dust very quickly but all the other things you mentioned are 'got over-able' after a while.
I have one and since April I have had two 'Oil Dilution' problems and two loss of Sat nav, phone connectivity and radio playing silly b***r problems.
Not a real problem as still under warranty and my LR dealer is aware of the oil dilution problem and fixed the other problems but it does mean days off the road and for a quick fix only possible if you are able to do without a courtesy car from the dealer.

Can’t say I had to warn anybody about the tailgate. 10 months of ownership and never once did it pose a problem. The D5 ain’t the only vehicle with corners on its tailgate and I’ve yet to read a story of someone being killed by a tailgate.
Currently thinking about a return to the D5, but a completely base model S spec, 2.0 with none of the software of other models. The only down side is the p s poor halogen headlights.23.5MY Defender 90 X-Dynamic SE D250 MHEV Pangea Green

I have noticed the corners of the tail gate not only are they sharp but the are curved down as if designed on purpose to get anybody not too careful on the head.
I do miss being able to stand on the lower half of the tail board to scan the countryside for lost dogs/horses/ people etc.

I suspect I might use the boot more than most; it’s very unusual if I don’t open and close the back at least half a dozen times a day, often with at least one other person there. If the car’s backed up against a raised curb and pavement, or simply a grassy bank, or the massive height of the curved tailgate means that the boot can only be part opened, then those daggers are at skull cleaving height
Add remote electrical operation and children playing with the electrical tailgate and it’s only a matter of time before someone gets hurt. And don’t rely on the automated safeguard stop, it won’t stop a fair amount of pressure has been applied. It certainly didn’t even notice an only-just-no-longer-green banana and fully closed as if it wasn’t there:
