I have had D3, D4's and now a D5. Yes they are very diffrent cars and as others have said the plastic on the D5 does seem softer and does mark more easily.
However the driving expirience has been great, it is quiter, quicker, does more to the gallon and tows better.
The boot space is not as square as the d4 but I have still put washing machines and fridges in the back with no issues.
Seats row two and three. We have used ours a lot with teenage kids all around 6 foot or taller and had NO complaints about comfort, low seats, sickness or anything. The only comment has been it is not as easy to get into row three as it was in the D4, but they also said there was less chance of catching skin or clothing on the mechanisum comapred to the D4
So would I go for another, YES I would, if I was given a brand new D4 or a brand new D5 which would I have, without doubt the D5MY17 D5 1st Edition Namib Orange

A good plan, mines a my16 fully loaded with every single factory option ticked, we’ve just cracked 38k miles and it’s in for it’s 3rd service this week and MOT. Had a look around for anything newer with same spec and could not see anything that made sense. I swore I’d never take a d4 outside factory warranty again but it now looks like I will be!
Defender could be a option but it’s still over a year away and with the risk it will have a similarly compromised load area.
Keep looking at the Merc x class with the 3.0l and hard top. Nowhere near the same car as the D4 though.MY06 S - Gone but not forgotten

I wonder what jeepmadmike is making of all of this?
Faced with the same dilemma, about 15 months ago, I found the Fatty had a lot more in common with the D4 than the D5 had (split tailgate, lower loading height, vertical lamps, big windows, lower waistline, great visibility, nice rear seat view out) and as I’d never used the third row in either of my 4’s, I use a really handy box trailer on the very few occasions that the Fatty’s boot is too small (as the D5’s boot would also have been). It also meant that the insanely quick and grunty SDV8 was an option
Yes, they are stupidly expensive new, but a low mileage, immaculate, 17MY example is a comparable cost to a new D5

I don’t know what to think
My D4 works for its living
The fact that the D5 interior has to be treated carefully puts me off more!
Can’t beleave the tail gate doesn’t injure more owners!
And spoke to a D5 owner who hated it yesterday (he’d had several 3’s and 4’s) found the door depth to be a real pain on sites and had trimmed the corners or the tail gate!
Much that I want one, it’s lost far to much practicality which is why I love my D4... think mine is going to have to keep going 🙏🏻MY14 post man pat van

Great examples there too.
Before I go on this page I always have a read of the D5 forum. It makes me feel a little better that we didn't wait for the D5 and pressed ahead with getting a new Landmark D4.My16 HSE Landmark - 2016 - Current. Indus Silver

All depends on what spec you go for, my SE didn’t have any shiny black plastics, I opted for the aluminium linear trim, which was actually plastic and a complete rip off at £125 option, which deleted the piano black. Even though mine was £53k it didn’t even get a cover for the cup holders, facia storage or the storage under the cup holders.

At least you went for the heated wheel option J77. Different from yours the new SEs come with a 10” infortainment, Pro Connect Services, reversing camera etc, but then the price has risen.

Just a tad under £60k to get the exact spec I had, just a tad under £54k in March 2017. Granted the 3.0 now puts out 306hp and there is slight tweaks to the spec. Fog lights are now optional on the SE.
The infotainment system on my one (the basic system) was far superior to the one in my Velar, which is now the standard system across the range, it worked well and never needed constant updates.
I do miss the high seating position of the Disco but I can’t see me going back to one unless it’s the 2.0 Diesel or petrol, they seem to be safe from the oil dilution issue.23.5MY Defender 90 X-Dynamic SE D250 MHEV Pangea Green

To anyone who relies on a dog ramp and who’s considering one, this might be an issue if they’ve previously been spoiled by a ‘4 or a Fatty:

LR make there’s bigger. But it’s something owners will need to think about, never bothered me as I lift my dog in.23.5MY Defender 90 X-Dynamic SE D250 MHEV Pangea Green

Surely the supporting tailgate wire is longer on the 4 in any case I've never seen anyone have a ramp in from the side.

I've never yet had to use a dog ramp, but if I did, it would be convenient to mount the ramp sideways. This is due to having to park in tandem, with little space between two vehicles, which allows us to get a third vehicle on to the gated off land behind our house. The alternative being to first move the vehicle or vehicles forwards, not the end of the world, but just more faffing, especially if it's raining.
Any excuse to bash the little powered flap though. 2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

It would be one hell of a whippet that you needed a ramp for My parents had a ramp for their lab you couldn't use that off the side of the tailgate.DS3 TDV6 HSE - Silver with Alpaca (old one) Gone
