So on a LFL basis the new model cannot register meaningful growth over the final sales of an old model that had been in production for a long time? That for me is a disappointment especially as the D4 was in significant wind down in that period.2014MY Discovery

Without comparable data for other models and manufacturers ramping up and ramping down, I have no idea!!
Does it really matter at the end of the day?
If you like the car then great, if not then equally fine.

Fine with that too. Shame is that there is now a gap in the market which no one fills.2014MY Discovery

I think LR have moved up market with pricing and I think there will be long faces when the new Defender pricing is released.

Agree with that too. I am looking at an XC90 next or just waiting a tad longer and then getting a large 4WD estate as my space requirements drop.2014MY Discovery

I won’t be back to Disco ownership, I like the D5 but it’s bigger than I really need, even the 4 was more than I needed. For me this Velar is slowly weaning me back to a normal car.23.5MY Defender 90 X-Dynamic SE D250 MHEV Pangea Green

I am one of those mums that drives her little darlings to school in the D4. It is such a brilliant car for so many things. It has all the gizmos needed to drive us to the Peak District or Alps and it isn't too posh/precious to stick stinky dogs that have rolled in fox poo or play chauffeur to muddy kids from a rugby match. It scrubs up really well and looks equally cool covered in mud.
But we won't be going for the D5 as and when we have to say goodbye to the D4. We will keep it for much longer now that there really isn't a like-for-like replacement in the pipeline.
A couple of the parents have gone down the Ford Ranger route. And in 2019 the Ford Bronco is coming out. Whether that comes to the UK is anyones guess, but it may well be a contender to many if Land Rover doesn't pull it's finger out. Those D5 sales figures are not great but they will be worse this time next year.My16 HSE Landmark - 2016 - Current. Indus Silver

Around here there are more new and newish LR/RRs than you can shake a stick at. Mostly D4s, RRS2s & L405 FFRRs with a handful of other types like ePokes and a token Deafner, and I only see one D5 regularly. This should be very fertile hunting grounds for JLR but the D5 has been pretty much shunned. These are peeps that are not enthusiasts like us that moan about this or that, how t'other was better in days of yore etc, these are peeps that seem to change cars for new ones more often than I change my socks (ok, slight exaduration, honest ). When a new LR/RR comes out they are all over it like a cheap suit but not the D5. If they can't sell them to Cobham's Yummy Mummy private school run set they have seriously dropped the ball.

Yes, I drive to affluent areas of the South every week and that's my take on it as well. One street in Wimbledon recently looked like a LR showroom. Virtually every model from the last 3 years, inc. Evoque convertible, but not a D5. I can go for days without seeing a D5.
I suspect that the Tonka toy styling of the D3/4 actually appealed to the Yummy Mummy set far more than LR appreciated. In a world of lookalike SUV's, the D4 shape and go anywhere looks were perhaps its USP.2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

Muddywheels, you are ruining the story. D5's are supposed to sold then disappear into the Land Rover Bermuda Triangle and never seen again!!

This.
The G class is too expensive for most yummy mummies so they need to accept a XC90s from their hubbies Volvo has always played the “safest vehicle for your loved ones” card and been quite successful.

Wrong ... the G class looks like a Cosy Coupe built in a Minecraft world. A great big pile of if you ask me. Even a 2CV has better aerodynamics than that. No mummy worth her collection of Jo Malone candles would be seen in that G-Class pile of junk.
And anyway, why have one of those things when you can get a LR Autobiography?
I drove past our local Bentley garage the other day. They had one of the monstrous Bentayga's on the forecourt with a roof rack on it. Now THAT made me My16 HSE Landmark - 2016 - Current. Indus Silver

I live in a village near Bath, a particularly wealthy city and area. It is awash with LR's finest products. My kids are at one of the five large Independent schools in Bath where I see loads of D3/4, Ewoks, RRS, FFRR and DS but I'm not seeing D5s, however, I am seeing loads of XC90, XC60 and interestingly T5s.
This must be a high target market / are for LR: Wealthy, professional, agricultural and lifestyle/activity/leisure orientated yet the D5 is not featuring. There has to be a reason(s).D4 HSE EU6 (Known as Jeeves)
