It looks like the Velar is the reason for the drop in Disco sales and it impressively outsold the disco

Ukraine 2005 Discovery 3 TDV6 S Manual Zambezi SilverDiscovery 3

LR decided to aim the D5 at a very crowded market. I wonder if that was so wise? The XC90, which is its closest competitor, is significantly out selling it.

Bare in mind those sales figures will include the 4 as the 5 didn’t officially go on sale until March 17, where as the XC90 has a full year. Next years figures will be the proof in the pudding, but I suspect the XC90 will still be the clear winner.

Pricing is a big factor, the 18MY is a no go for me, it’s a £3k increase for a like for like spec on my current one and adds very little. By the time I look to change mine it will be 20MY and I shudder to think of the price by then.

Still enjoying mine though and glad I took the plunge when I did Very Happy

I think the XC90 will always outsell the Discovery and probably always has.

It has been aiming at the same family buyers since 2002 and the Discovery is unlikely to sway many from that base.

The Discovery I think will always sell in relatively low volumes.

I'm not surprised by the figures. As mentioned in a previous post when I did a test drive of the D5 at my local dealer the sales guy said that people don't like the look of the D5. He said it not me. If they make the back end less bulky it should improve sales.

But wasn’t LR’s intention to make the Disco more mainstream (ie less Discovery like) in order to be able to compete more directly with the higher volume manufacturers, like Volvo and the mass market manufacturers, like BMW and thus substantially increase their market share?

Have they offended and lost many of their core customers, but not changed the buying patterns of those whose needs aren’t quite so sophisticated? The X5 used to outsell the D4 5 to 1; I’d like to know how the X5’s sales have done over the same 2016 period, but I can’t find the stats.
 2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2
2015 - 2017: 2 x D4
2017 to date: FFRR SDV8
2023 to date: 2 x FL2 as “second” cars 🙄

2021 to date: Hinckley built ‘14 Triumph Trophy 1200
2022 to date: Hinckley built ‘14 Triumph Trophy 1200 & sidecar!
(One of only two known to exist in the world!)

Rather than comparables with other makes I think the figure that speaks volumes is that of comparable JLR sales.... the fact that they sold more FFRR”s and RRS”s than D5”s in the same period..

In my own case I won’t be buying a D5 purely due to cost.. by the time I spec one to my needs it was more expensive than having an RRS... which is what I bought...
they are just too expensive...... Very Happy

From LR USA. 2017 august sales

When you read more of the US August sales figures, the D5 performance was terrible

U.S. BRAND HIGHLIGHTS

Land Rover

For the month of August, Land Rover sales hit 6,320 units, the best ever Month of August sales for the brand.

The Range Rover SUV also had its best August performance ever with 1,409 sales, up 14 percent from 1,236 units sold in August 2016. The new Range Rover Velar had its first week of sales in the U.S. adding 413 units to the record total.

The Discovery Sport increased in August with 1,211 units sold, up 17 percent from 1,038 units sold in August 2016.

I can't readily find any Disco5 sales numbers for Oct 2017,

But the Below UK headline performance is not encouraging

"UK subsidiary, Jaguar Land Rover reported lower numbers. JLR sold 7,097 units in October, 21.5% lower than a year ago. Furthermore, total sales of Jaguar for October fell 63% (YoY), while that of Land Rover was down 7% (YoY)."

63% drop in Jag sales (YoY) does not sound right ?

I think it would be interesting to see 'planned sales vs actual', not just actual sales. Remember that the more D5's they build, the less FFRR and RRS are built....

So they sold 65K in Sept and 7k in Oct - I think that is probably not correct...

The Nissan Qashqai was the most popular SUV in October and sold 3923.

Next closest was the Ford Kuga at 2493.

No Land Rover products in the top ten for sales.
