From a population of 5 million, New Zealand does very well on the sporting stage per capita.
Got to laugh!

Sadly my rowing career was in wrong period....only Redgrave had sponsorship in the mid 80s....and we knew that the eastern block countries were
35hr a week training / rowing once I was over 18 made any sort of work difficult. Work won and I retired at 19. I do and I dont regret, it was a point in time, and most I rowed with are still in the sport....... however I suspect my income is far greater! Well apart from Garry Herbet who did very well as a cox and commentator (started with us as a spare cox).

I retired at 29. Time just wasn't there for the commitment. Still miss it and had a brief hope my daughter would take it up at 13, but hockey one out in the end.
My wife came out of retirement at 38 in a S1 lightweight coxed four known as the Mummies Return. They did a few seasons but time was always difficult for them so it was a great last hurrah. They did well though and beat a few university crews half their age!D4 HSE EU6 (Known as Jeeves)

Nice one!
Made a return in my 30s in a 1x and bumped into a lot of faces. But just couldn't get back up to the top step without a coach, top club or a full time commitment. Did a stint a TTRC in their first eight /4x for 6months, oldest guy in the boat by far but the highest ergo score by 27seconds!....... but the traveling up from Southampton was taking it toll

Oddly my wife and I have thought about a double scull for a bit of fun.
I was at Lake Bled last year and there were quite a few mixed sculls out on the lake.D4 HSE EU6 (Known as Jeeves)

As most of the weight gain is usually around the center the balance should still be ok

Coastal rowing is hmmmm..... Hence the River 1x route on the Itchen. Originally BTC, but I trained at Coalies due to a few of us focusing on the river and rowing for TTRC , and then ended up joining, which was a disaster as I couldn't boat from the steps....1x bulkhead wasn't strong enough
