Hi All,
For those contemplating stripping your removable towbar, its fairly straight forward.
Here is a picture of the bits.
Some points to note.
The locking ball will fly out when the locking bolt is withdrawn, its on top, wrap the bolt in something as it is removed to catch ball, when it goes into orbit it is 6.3mm, there is a small spring under the ball.
When removing the lock do it from side opposite the ball (hope this does not give the secrets away it will make sense when you see it).
I found it best to lock the bolt back, then remove lock and opposite cover plate.
mark the pinion gear position, I marked the step on gear in the paint under the cover plate on the side of the towbar.
Remove the gear then clamp the bolt across the towbar to the spring casing behind the ball.
This clamp needs to be adjustable, G clamp vise etc.
Adjust the tension until the pin on the top of the inserted section can be pressed, this unlocks the bolt.
Release the clamp slowly and withdraw the bolt, catching the ball.
When replacing the gear alignment is critical to get the correct travel on the bolt.
Take a picture showing gear and lock alignment in case things go TU.
The bolts retaining the cover plate and red part of the locking assembly are tightened to FT with thread lock applied, I used blue on re assembly.
I held the ball in with a small mole wrench whilst re inserting the bolt, all inside a clear plastic bag in case it escaped.
Make shure the ball is on top inline with its detent, when re inserting the bolt, I used the gear inserted backwards temporarily, It may reach the end of its travel and need moving round part way in.
When the bolt locks in place re insert the gear lock and cover plate as per the mark and pictures.
Hope this helps
Bob

Not sure if mentioned before but just bought a new discovery 4 and there is an addendum to the manual to basically say remove able towbar only to be fitted when being used, leaving it in when not is use will result in wear & could result in failure.
Basically if it fails its now your fault !Previously those that have a special place in my heart

Hi folks
I bought a fitted tow bar for my disco for the same reasons as everyone else, but I can't get the m14 bolts out to fit the crossbars!
Any tips or tricks folks??!
Thank you
