Removing oil filter without special tool
On getting the oil filter out I found pulling the lug on the filter with a pair of pliers gently was quick and easy. Useful as in dusty Uganda we are changing oil every 5000km.

Just a quick tip, you can actually slip the filter element into the plastic housing and just screw it back in normally, the plastic lug will find its way home on it's own, honest!

Looks like LR have made a mod, but on my MY08 you will need a 15mm ring key/open ended spanner as well.
They seem to have replaced the captive nuts on a pair of the bolts on the sump guard.
Changed my oil today Bazza M111

Oil change
Thanks Matt and to the others who contributed to these instructions.
I managed to change the oil last week without dramas following a long trip through the Kimberley district of Western Australia. When I first decided to try an oil change I was a bit disillusioned when I stuck my head underneath to see if I could see the oil filter!! Now I know why I couldn't find it down there!!
The instructions were really clear and my successful foray into a bit of home maintenance has given me the courage to actually take a look under the plastic covers that seem to dominate the engine bay. I've even managed to put in a new air filter!!
Best wishes "I feel like I'm running out of time!"

thanks for the tip, did an intrim change the other day...... i didn't realise the sump pan weighed that much tho
Club MTR, black RRS wheels, RAI, GN sump guard, etc blah
D3, D1, DEF 90, FREELANDER COMMERCIAL
Did an interim oilchange at 7500 miles today. Big thanks to Nick at Yeovil for putting the filter and sump plug on the parts van as it did its rounds of the local LR indies.
And a big to the chicken that joined me under the car as I was loosening the sump plug. Lots of ash from the log burner seems to have soaked up most of the resulting spill I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

This is great, thanks.
I have an oil leak, not disasterous but more than the odd drop too.
In trying to find the source I found oil around the oil filter housing (it had its service a little while since)
Anyway, with the aid of these pictures I thought I would take the filter housing off to make sure it is sealed ok.
I have noticed that there is no seal around the threaded part of the plastic housing! did you say that it should have one?
What does it look like?
I have the filter out of the housing and off the vehicle I guess I will have to put a new one in rather than put the old one back?
Any thoughts welcomed

Saab had this as standard procedure for a few years until they discovered the reason why the engines in low-use vehicles were being destroyed. Sludge built-up in the bottom of the sump and eventually couldn't be sucked-up by the pump.
Best practice is to not remove the filter with the sump empty so as not to drain the pump thus running with no oil pressure for less time on startup.
