I can’t help thinking that this is being well over thought.

Let’s be honest, 90% of drivers really don’t give a toss about their cars, and manufacturers give even less of a toss!

Just drive it and be done with it.

The only reason you go to a dealer for service in the first place is so you have good will and warranty cover, nothing else.

The whole, let it warm up and cool down thing in real terms makes no difference. As it’s been said before, millions of cars on the road with millions of miles and still chugging on with their owners not even considering why.

My mum doesn’t stay awake at night thinking about oil grades and if she should warm the engine and cool it down etc.

It's true that a lot of drivers don't mind their cars, because they don't want to know how they works.
But, as a lot of Land Rover owners, I'm passionate and I'd never let anybody touch my car, and mostly a dealer ! I don't trust most of them. The first target for a dealer is to win money and to sale new cars, not to do the best to make cars lasting. But anybody is free to do as he wants.

Why? Where in my post did I give the impression that I don't look after my cars?

At the end of the day, I am purely pointing out that 90% of cars are just driven, and put into the dealers, and that people don't really give it a second thought.

I look after my cars just as much as the next person.

Buying a second hand premium car is the worst, because on balance, most people that spend 100k on a new car, really know nothing about them, arnt interested in fixing them and mainly use the warranty period and sell on after 3 years.

The fact that we are here talking about a car snapping a crank is the real problem, and it shouldn't be happening.

I am reading this on the D3 part of the forum… D3’s barely snap their cranks as far as i am aware off Cool

Otherwise i agree that snapping/main bearing failure should not happen, BUT do also take in consideration that using a 2,5T or even heavier motor in Europe (yes that is incl the UK) on relatively short distances (a lot of village/city use) with a lot of start/stop use is different on an engine than use in rural area’s or continents like africa, Australia, where the nearest average stop is by far more than here (average)

Toyota engines may be more bulletproof than LR engines, BUT i also see a lot more (heavy 2,5T +) LR’s on the (city) roads here in europe than Toyota’s with that weight…

Meaning: comparing 1:1 may not be as straightforward as it seems…. And type of use and behavior DO make a difference in this case…

I never see the snap crank/spun bearing complaints regarding use in the JAG/peugeot versions..
(AND those JAG/PSA models who are equipped with a TdV6 rarely are shopping type of motors either)

This debate and arguments can be extended evenmore… but… i stick to a new oilpump at least every 80K miles and the JLR recommended oil…. JMHO

I don't idle my RRS to warm it up. That's just a silly idea that would require it to be sat on the driveway for several minutes. I get in and drive it basically straight away - I get in start the engine, put on my belt, set up the phone so I can use Maps, go. I also can't follow the "don't use any throttle until it's fully warm advice because I live in a village that has hills on two of the access roads and they're the roads I use most of the time.

When I get somewhere, I will usually leave the engine idling for 30 seconds (depending on what I'm doing) to give the turbos some "spin down" time.

My last RRS was sold on with 175k miles on it. My current RRS has 140k miles on it. [touches wood, of course].

Oh, and doing lots of idling probably isn't helpful with modern emissions-controlled engines. DPFs, catalysts, etc., all want to be hot and idling doesn't get them there.

Yes well you have a nice V8 so probably aren't too concerned about your crank going ping Thumbs Up also putting your foot down to safely join fast traffic is a must, forget nursing it and joining at half the speed because you might get to 250k miles on your engine instead of 220k Thumbs Up

As one who has had a crankshaft failure I'd love to know what the cause is. But as said I can't see JLR getting the oil type wrong. Mines been regularly serviced and dealer oil most of the time though I did supply my own some of the time but always to the spec laid down by JLR for disco 4.
I also would like to see how they come to their theory's as they certainly wont have the research resources of a major player like JLR or ford. To often we are seeing if it's on line it must be right, often it isn't but to many a layman who have no expertise in the particular field they're watching they take it as gospel truth.
I have mine back now and just hope lightening doesn't strike twice in the same place.
I had spent all day off road but nothing sever, just some well maintained hill tracks above Loch Muick and over towards Glen Clova then pulling out of a junction in Pitlochry that night it went. Still none the wiser why it went and never saw what they found in the dealers.
As some body said earlier most manufactures have faults somewhere if you look hard enough. I just wish JLR would publish what they've found as they must have inspected many returned bits.

All the pics of snapped cranks i have seen all seem to have failed due to lack of oil.
IE the bearings are damaged and the crankshaft has got hot due to lack of lube.
Has anyone seen a crankshaft just snap (mechanical failure) and the bearings are still relatively okay ?

Less failures in Jags (due to weight) but they do happen in S-Type, XJ, XF 2.7 & 3.0
