to those who think the D5 is something of a big DS - you dont know what you are missing.
After nearly a year with my D5 (after having every other discos since 1992) I am very happy with it. OK, I was also an early detractor, especially about its end, but it does everything the D4 did with much more refinement - I'll stick with mine thanks

My earlier point was that the D5 and DS share the current design DNA, just as the FL2 did with the D3/4.
Many of us will have driven both FL2 and D3/4, as well as D5 and DS.2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

To answer the above question, I replaced my 6th consecutive Discovery with an L405 FFRR and I’m happy to point out the negatives as well as positives in doing so.
This is a forum for D3/4, so of course posters will have strong opinions on other vehicles, particularly other LR models. It would be odd if they didn’t. 👍
This is my current plan for when I change. If I'm going to be forced to have something with the design slider pushed further towards 'posh-roader', and be facing prices in the next bracket up from when I bought my D4, I think "Why not do it properly" - get a FFRR D4 XS, gone, much loved, never forgotten

I like the big Range and had a hankering for one, but, they’re just a bit too posh for me. The Velar is too posh for me really.
They are Savile Row, whereas I’m more Skid Row
The Defenders been on the list for years but just couldn’t justify having too vehicles and I couldn’t live with a Defender as a daily driver. The new one has changed all that it’s got a proper Land Rover feel about it, takes me back to getting my first D3 and I’m counting down the days until October 2020
Can’t see me going back to Disco ownership.23.5MY Defender 90 X-Dynamic SE D250 MHEV Pangea Green

I wanted the both massage seats and sliding roof, so it had to be an Autobiography. IMO, it’s too much money new, approx £108k list price for my SDV8, but at 2.5 years old with 20,500 on the clock and a price of £52k it makes more sense.
It’s not a D4 though, but then nothing is inc. the D5. So as I was going to have to compromise anyway, I prioritised my most important factors in order and the FFRR ticked the first 6 boxes.2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

I’m not sure the FFRR is really any “posher” than the Velar. The boot of mine is currently full of builders waste/rumble. A hatchbag and flexible rubber mat and it’s ready to work.

Yikes, someone took a big kick in the wallet there, didn't they? It's a lot of vehicle for the money at £52k, but a lot of money for the vehicle at £108k...Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

I agree
As wonderful as it is, it’s not £108k wonderful. Imo anyway. Presumably the first owner didn’t pay full list, but even so.
Saying that it’s not hard to spec the new Defender to over £80k and I expect the D5 is similar, although I’ve never looked. So it’s all relative I guess.2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

The L494 RRS is as bad, pricewise, as the FFRR these days. A new one for £80k-£100k? Er, no way. As good as the new ones are (and they really are good), that's silly money.
Both of my L320 RRS cost me in the £20-30k region, bought second hand in each case. At that money they're great, nothing comes close for the blend of on- and off-road ability, comfort, etc. When the L494 drops to that price, I'll probably get one, although I do have a L405 itch to scratch at some point too.Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

There’s a significant difference/driving experience between the current FFRR and RRS. The later being far more sporty in all ways and the former a much calmer, quieter and generally more soothing and cosseting experience.
What makes a massive difference on the current FFRR is having the Dynamic Response system, which isn’t available with all the engines. It really does transform the handling.2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

DG-My point exactly. Why give a about what others think.
I’m sure you’d not want to stifle the opinions of others, good or bad, though.
Ah but that is the thing, most people nowadays care a great deal what others think of them, if the did not they would buy a Dacia Duster.
Before you say it a Dacia will do pretty much what most discsos (all ages) are used for, people go on about we need one for the van, you do not really need a caravan, you want a caravan.
Need 4x4? pay anohter couple of k and get the 4x4 version.
I do agree ref people should be allowed their opinions whether others like them or not, if people do not like them simply do not read them, it is the one thing I do not get about social media, people getting all upset at others opinions?
Move on, leave the forum/web/facebook etc, there are pleny of other like minded people elsewhere.
