People are saying it will protect you from rain as its such a large boot canopy. It won't, it's so large, when open, you will have your very own microclimate
It also comes with innovation, a warning system "warning, this boot is opening... warning, this boot is opening" is announced repeatedly via external speakers so that when you use the remote open functionality you don't knock someone over!
Will have to wait and see, for me it's about the overall practicality and value proposition, but as they are going more premium, I suspect I loose the value proposition (I.e. Too expensive for me ), but it's been suggested that the defender replacement would appeal to people who use the D3/4 more practically.
The shame here is that's years away, will be cheaper and therefore lower value for JLR as they can shift bucket loads of premium cars.

i would be happy enough with that. rebadge the d4 as the "new defender"

Yep said it before if they had retooled the T5 line for a defender replacement it would have sold like hot cakes a more rugged stripped down T5 would be brilliant ! The platforms already proven and has payed for itself goodness knows how many times over. It would have bought them more time to get the proper replacement.
Imagine the T5 in SWB and LWB formats, something like this could sit on the T5 no problem 8)

I imagine I might be one of the few here with a feeling of deja vu. Having owned 3 of the ultra practical, mini Disco like, FL2's, I felt pretty much as many on here now feel when I went to see the DS; a little concerned, but hoping for the best.
What we got was a stylish, nice to drive, tall estate car with a lot of very real positives; a huge improvement on the Golf's, the A3's (Audi Golf) and 3 Series' that most of its prospective customers will be suffering from now. But what it absolutely was not was a direct replacement to the ultra practical, spacious, high roofed, stepped roofed, light filled, short over-hanged and fairly agricultural FL2! The FL2 line was simply abandoned; many of the FL2's customers are either hanging on to their current cars for as long as possible, buying the newest example they can get their hands on / afford, or have already moved on elsewhere.
The single deciding moment was when I went to get into the back seat and banged the side of my head (at ear level!) on the edge of the drooping roof I then went and got into the back seat of a D4, just to prove a point really; it was everything that the FL2 was, but better in every way, so I bought one
With all the evidence pointing to the D5 being no more or less than a scaled up DS, but with a half arsed attempt at a step in the roof, I see no reason to get my hopes up.2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2

Totally agree....the FL2 was & still is the Disco "small"
Spacious, capable, economical to run.....ours won't be sold
Disco Sport...badge engineering
Disco by name only.....this name & badge represents something the current DS clearly is not & will never be.
That's what I mean about LR making mistakes.....burgering about fixing things that don't need fixing
They say in design...."function dictates form" not the other way around
The flexibility & shear usability of the D3/4 split is iconic design....practical, purposeful, usable....nothing to do with style, fashion, or trends.....if LR marketing have driven this change they are totally on the wrong track & fundamentally in the wrong direction.BREXIT - done properly.
Right now ...We need Government - not Politics
Save the Dipstick Flagbearer-keep it simple, less likely to fail campaign-agenda items:Starting Handles, Acetylene Lamps.
Founder: Dipsticks-R-Us Inc
D3 HSE-perfectly formed, passenger friendly...has real DIPSTICK
Jag XK-but sadly no DIPSTICK...HUGE design fault
FL2 has DIPSTICK..."real comfort in rear seats"
VW Golf wondermobile (?)..has real DIPSTICK
Morris Minor..original DIPSTICK technology..and a real KEY.

The (otherwise pretty horrible) BMW X5 outsells the D4, worldwide, 5:1 AND has a split tailgate.
Until recently it was 2:1 and more recently 3:1 ...but lets remember that is due to a build capacity issue rather than popularity.
When they upgrade the X5 from the ancient design into a fresh new model in the same manner as the forthcoming D5 then we will see if the tailgate survives.

Even the Mitsubishi Outlander / Citroen / Peugeot thing can manage one:

Whatever LR or anyone else says, the D5 as revealed so far will not do everything the D3/4 does - that much is blatently apparent and not subject to opinion. Small rear windows, less roomy wheel arches without proper trims, a less boxy shape, no split tailgate (unless we have yet to see it as an option) but a big one that needs more clearance, no chunky front bumper, lighter weight (if hopefully not by too much) - all these things have direct repercussions and already represent various aspects of lost ability, and every single one of these aspects I have made use of in one way or another on my current vehicle and I am very far from alone.
When it comes to the tailgate, I could manage without it, but have no desire to do so, so I won't unless I am absolutely forced to do so, which seems unlikely. Most importantly, I have cause to chuck all sorts of stuff in the boot - saddles, muddy boots, dogs, water tubs, the odd bale of hay, horse feed, compost, sand, paving slabs, wheels/tyres, wood, bitumen sheets, fence posts. I use it well, and I need to be able to use it easily. I have better things to do than wait for an electric tailgate to open every time I want to access it. I couldn't put up with the hassle every time I've forgotten something, when I realise I've forgotten to grab a dog poo bag from one of the side buckets, when I've forgotten to put the dog lead in, or a pair of boots etc. In horizontal rain I'd want it to be open and closed as quickly as possible too. Our tailgate is up and down frequently, and a slow and annoying electric tailgate would be an absolute deal breaker. Hugely disproportionate attention been levied here of what its backside will or won't be - do you choose your women purely on how their bottom looks and where the split is ?

Too many on here looking for problems that at the moment don't exist because nobody has had a close look at the car in the metal, nobody knows how it's interior is laid out. The DS for all its faults is a highly spacious car with a relatively small foot print.
I had the electric tailgate on my DS, didn't see any problems with it, no shopping fell out all over the car park because it wasn't split, it can still be closed manually, my dogs didn't jump out.
The DS is a far more capable car than some give it credit for and I've no doubt the D5 will be the same.
Perhaps I'm being overly optimistic but I would rather have the chance to see it in the flesh before I write it off.23.5MY Defender 90 X-Dynamic SE D250 MHEV Pangea Green

Hopefully the designers of the DS learnt from the mistakes of the boot designers of the RRS....the DS has an angled plastic strip which tilts forwards retaining the shopping bags....the RRS strip is angled in the opposite direction hence the shopping falls out....
Think you have too agree the D4 is considerably more practical however.....

After the demise of the Defender, the D4 seems to be the last bastion of the practical, agricultural, Land Rover. I don't see too many of the new generation of Land Rovers being used in farm yards and on construction sites where, when it isn't Japanese, elderly Defenders and Discos rule
They can tart up (and make as impractical as they like) all other Land Rovers and Range Rovers if they wish, but they can mess with the proper stuff at their peril! We don't need another girly Land Rover!

I wonder if it's a full tailgate with a split also ?!
Surely this could be done with some clever engineering. Top tailgate picks up the lower tailgate or leaves it locked in the lower position depending on which release button you press ?
Wishful thinking I guess !! But who knows .......Velar MY18 D180 S Narvik

I'd say this is pretty compelling evidence that there isn't going to be anything other than a slide out platform ...which may well be enough to stop your calves cleaning the lower bumper and also place a jetboil on
