I'm sitting perched on my tailgate as I type this, if the boot cover is anything like the DS it will rattle like hell and if the 3rd row seat belts are the same then they won't stay in their retaining clips. Just to add more doom and gloom.23.5MY Defender 90 X-Dynamic SE D250 MHEV Pangea Green

If the utility platform works as I think it should then it will probably allow for partial and full extension meaning you could get the depth of the current lower tailgate or maybe even more. If really clever with the design they could also use it as a mechanical loading platform to help shift cargo to the back of the boot.
The rear cargo area could be increased through rear, row 2, seating being able to be moved back and forth meaning the capacity plus passengers could be even higher than the D4.
They could literally give us a far more practical and versatile vehicle just through clever adaption of new tech - let's face it the current cars are great but those row 2 seats are rather archaic when you consider the tech available now.
Where I do have concern is the clamshell/curved nature of that tailgate. Whilst I am sure sensors will stop accidental knocks in height restricted areas, knowing many multi storey car parks are under 2m, I can see situations where it is difficult to get under the tailgate to load up, or maybe the photo angle makes it look that bad and it's not really.MY15 DIY Black Pack (Better than factory and half the price!)

My DS was delayed due to its high tech 2nd row seating, it's slide and recline seating is useless. But I agree that the new Disco maybe just as practical if LR have been clever with packaging.23.5MY Defender 90 X-Dynamic SE D250 MHEV Pangea Green

today had the great dane and pointer in the back and still managed to pick up a bale on the way home with no effort. As i slammed the tailgate tight up to the bail i just thought if this was a D5 with bench thing and auto closing door it would be bouncing back at me now bleeping and goodness knows what and id be fighting it to get down.
I do hope the way they have designed this platform has some innovation and really does do the job of the lower tailgate. If you raise the boot and the platform is still up to stop the dogs until you pull it down and then maybe you can pull it and it slides the load bed forward like the sliding accessory now that would be interesting. I would prefer manual than electro mechanical with auto stops etc. All for tech upfront but the rear needs to be fast acting and easy and when you automate things like doors (creating a machine) health and safety necessities sensors and auto stops etc which I don't want in this normal (for me) Disco scenario, just slam it shut or leave it down job done

you may hate everything else about my jap truck but it does have a lovely split tailgate
Interestingly I seem to recall on the early days of this forum a lot of people were whinging about the change from the D1/D2 side opening door to the split tailgate... Steve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)

Okay, I'm not going to whinge any more, besides I've probably got a good three years before I need to think about a possible replacement. However, I'm genuinely interested in what the advantages are of a single tailgate. It's a big loss for LR if the gain isn't tangible. Is it simply cost? Is a single large tailgate that much cheaper to produce? Or is it a weight saving? I would have thought that huge tailgate with massive wing, large motorised rams and the addition of an "activity platform" was neither cheaper or lighter... What am I missing?

Ultimately you have to look at the competition...no one else has a split gate ...people want the "wave your foot under the back bumper" or fob activated auto opening gate ....this married with the fact that you need two pieces of fabrication together with two sets of hinges and stays ...it's more trouble than it's worth and if that upsets a few whiney old codgers lamenting the passing of their jetboil positioning exploits ...then so be it

big tailgate equals large cover for when its raining or very sunny - after that I'm struggling - before my Discos I had two French full fat people carriers each with very large tailgates much like the VW T5 and that was all I could say in their tailgates favour...Steve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)

The (otherwise pretty horrible) BMW X5 outsells the D4, worldwide, 5:1 AND has a split tailgate.

Even the Mitsubishi Outlander / Citroen / Peugeot thing can manage one:

I have the feeling that Land Rover could give up everything that they currently do and apply their brand to a range of Korean built, front wheel drive, economy hatchbacks and you'd be able to find only the positive. Meanwhile, all decenters would be branded "whiney old codgers"!
Absolute and unconditional support of any manufacturer breeds their arrogance and complacency. Land Rover are sound enough to handle a little criticism and when they get it wrong, badly wrong, even their most dedicated supporters (and especially their most dedicated supporters!) owe it to them to let them know 2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2

BLFarrar, I understand your point and not all users have the same needs, for some the split tailgate might be absolutely necessary, for others might be just a nice to have, for others might be a negative.
What I find strange is dismissing totally a vehicle only on the base of a few pictures.
BLFarrar wrote:
OK some dont:
- fill the D3/4 to the gunnels with kit....you dont have to compromise & hire a van or use a trailer
- go off road....but you can if you want or need to
- tow huge trailers...but lots do & is the reason the vehicle was bought
- use the rear AC......if you have & it works (mine does) brilliant for the comfort of passengers
- use the 6/7 seats...you dont have to but you can & the passengers dont have to be deformed or vertically challenged
- exploit the capabilities to go..... where others dont...winter driving.....you just drive where others cant - fitted as standard
- use or need the spilt tailgate..if its good enough for the FFRR its a brilliant feature that I appreciate....if you dont care or want something else .....then go buy something else
How do you know the D5 cannot fit a lot of cargo? (yes probably less than the D4)
How do you know the D5 cannot off-road as well or better than the D4?
How do you know the D5 cannot pull a big trailer as well as the D4?
The D5 doesn't have rear AC?
What is the size of rear passengers that the D5 can accommodate?
How do you know the D5 cannot go on the snow as well or even better than the D4?
Granted on the Spilit gate, if you need it.
You missed the point...
All I listed are standard features ..... As well as the load capacity & the tailgate we have now
The split tailgate was carried over to the new model FFRR...if it's the right thing for the flagship its right too for the disco
The standard features are.....standard
You use them when want or leave the ready for use when you do.....
The point that I & many others are lamenting here isn't just one of a list of nice to haves....it's an intrinsic feature that really works.
What a amazing me is the height of the vehicle with the gate opened ..... Our D3/4's are about 1.97 high
This must be way over 2 metres...I just wonder about opening the gate at all in a roofed car park or even your garage.BREXIT - done properly.

Looking at this picture of the X5 and DG's picture of the D5 you can clearly see in DG's photo a lower piece sticking out, this could well be and probably is the event platform but it could also be like the X5 a small lower tailgate.

I totally get what DG says. I think worrying about the lack of a split tailgate is maybe wrong it's more a worry about the activity platform and if it will replace the lower tailgates very big shoes. A tough working platform that we have total control of and acts as a access barrier when the upper tailgate is released.
I think I can see one aspect that's going to be an issue which is portrayed in DSLs wood carrying shots. Even if the platform can stay out and the top tailgate lower onto a protruding load the lights are wrong so your not going to be legal. Top gear film crew will have trouble too.
It will grow on many I hope it does for me but fact is I have real and necessary practical needs, I can't buy our main car with just my heart anymore. The D4 is bought with my heart and my head I hope the D5 can be too.
