I knew, in my heart of hearts, that the news was going to be bad, but the proof that LR have completely cocked up one of the best aspects of the car has left me angry! The loss of the split tailgate is a complete disaster, but that's on top of all the rest....
Somehow, someone in Land Rover's design department has got themselves paid for designing the same car twice: firstly, they design the Disco Sport (itself not a bad looking car, but an obvious development of the Evoque), then they "design" the Disco 5. It's becoming pretty apparent that it's exactly the same car, just a bit bigger. Have the talents of LR's design department been completely exhausted?
The new design is not ugly, or unpleasant in any way. It's just utterly predictable and now ordinary. It has taken the utterly distinctive, ultra practical and brilliantly utilitarian looking classic Disco shape and turned it into the automotive equivalent of vanilla flavour baby food
With the FL2 and now the last of the nice Disco's gone, what options are now left for someone looking for a serious Land Rover? It seems that the unaffordable FFRR is all that's left 2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2
2015 - 2017: 2 x D4

Tail gate is HUGE! How much space do you need behind you and above you to open it!
..and I hear that's a problem currently it's being worked on, but the auto lift struts are , well, not lifting it properly Altox GSM FBH controller thread

I agree.....this will not convince me to upgrade. I will just buy a nice used LR4 when the time comes.

i did think that it didnt look fully open! Think they will need to go to a hydraulic design firm to set them up with a small HPU and a couple of hydraulic cylinders!
I presume its opened by a button and can just imagine people shopping falling out, dogs escaping etc.
Not for me im affraid. No longer excited about the release. Its just a big school run car!

Its a big tailgate that
So now we know there is no lower tailgate it will be interesting to see how slick the platform works in real life and what the physical load space looks like. If thats too compromised then I'm gonna go down a custom T6 route. Should be able to get something pretty decent for the £70k I was prepared to send LRs way!
Aside from the tailgate disaster and pending load space confirmation it looks like it has potential. I am imagining it with side steps, rack, decent tyres and a light bar on the top though MY06 S - Gone but not forgotten

More than a tad disappointed if that's it. Quite apart from the tailgate issue it just looks bloody awful. Maybe roof bars would improve the look (I don't see even the short version on that vehicle). I may regret not buying a run out model. SWMBO just said "Yuck!" Never take life too seriously. Nobody gets out alive anyway.

I wonder if the electric opening struts are man enough to open and close such a massive one piece boot .... they do a great job on the small sport hatch

That's the first one I've seen without the roof bars, the step in the roof looks pretty poor.23.5MY Defender 90 X-Dynamic SE D250 MHEV Pangea Green

It's a hell of a size. I predict delays to orders and tailgate struts will be the cause.23.5MY Defender 90 X-Dynamic SE D250 MHEV Pangea Green

Yeh mind you VW and Ford do lift up tailgates on transits and T5s they must weigh something and they are steel not aluminium so its technically doable. Mind you this is LR MY06 S - Gone but not forgotten
