I have started with second hand D3 and covered almost 100K in it. It had some work done on it but a lot of of it was due to my paranoia leading to prevent issues which is no more
the amount of i put on the old bus and stuff i thrown it at was huge and it always delivered even round trip to Poland with fooked clutch!
New bus is even better but i do not worry no more just enjoy driving it as it is awesome vehicle! Go for it but check ti very well before purchase just to minimize the amount of work you'd have to do on it and i bet it would be awesome making you go into permagrin state everyday

I'm on my 5th, had no major grief although the 2007 did have a little more work than the others but I covered it with Warranty Direct so it wasn't painful. 2004 Discovery 3 - gone
2006 Discovery 3 - gone
2008 Discovery 3 GS - gone
2011 Freelander LE Special Edition - gone
2007 Discovery 3 XS - gone
2012 Discovery 4 GS - current

Yes i driven both. The Land Rover was really nice, it gave a sense of occasion driving it rather than just driving it if that makes sense. The Toyota drove fine but very bland to be honest. I like the Land Rover but the problem i have is the constant tales of unreliability. I know people who have them and love them but hate the fact its always broken/being repaired.

I have recently had the misfortune to drive a brand new Toyota Landcruiser (£57,000+ as tested), and it was absolutely diabolical. It handled (if you could call it that) like a barge without a rudder, the ride was awful, and the inside so cheap and tacky it beggars belief. Everyone goes on about how wonderful they are off road, and quite honestly, that's the best place for them!
At the same event I drove a new D4 Landmark!
Several years ago, I bought my D3 (and a few years later the D4) on the back of doing that testing. On occasions they can be a pain, but even when I've had the odd "tiff" with mine, and have looked at alternatives, I have yet to find such a good all-rounder.
