Neither Russell and if I'm wrong I'll happily admit that I was wrong nearer the time if indeed I am. But as I said over a year ago, two very senior LR executives both told me independently that whilst they might just get to the point of accepting orders in 2016 the chance of any customer deliveries taking place before 2017 was extremely slim. One of the execs is working in procurement and the other in vehicle electronics so I'm assuming that they would have a pretty good idea (but of course that could be wrong).
That does mean of course that we might soon see pictures and actual vehicles on the road at the end of 2016.
They haven't even decided where they are going to build it yet.......
I'm seeing one of those LR guys in a couple of weeks so I'll see what he has to say.

Early 2017 availability is what I'm hearing too.
Tell your pal that we want a split tailgate, plenty space inside and that it doesn't look anything like the pictures we're seeing just now

Intretsing as we have just been away on holiday and talking with a gent whilst we were away, he is the MD of a company that supplies parts to JLR for all their vehicles, he stated without any prompting that they were already producing components for the new D5. He had seen it in the flesh at Gaydon on several occasions and very recently and he stated that production would start April May 2016 cars out for launch/release June July with customer cars available for delivery towards the end of 2016.
He did not need to be pushed on this and was very open about it. He would not give details such as split tailgate but did state in his opinion it was a stunning car to the point he may well change his FFR for one!!!! and his wifes RRS would definatley be changed for one as soon as orders were been taken. He said it was a BMW and Volvo beater without any problem.
As you have said this is all hear say form lots of diffrent people but it would appear that it is coming and maybe quicker than some believe.
There is one other point we are all missing. The Chinease market is collapsing if not already totally collapsed, as such LR will be looking to their roots for customers, customers who will not want an oldder style model when there are new models out such as the XC90, the all new ML, new X5 etca such they may well pull out all the stops to get it out sooner rather than later to protect their market position.MY17 D5 1st Edition Namib Orange

On that point Russell I agree with you entirely. However, the Evoke convertible and Evoke XL (I think) are the next immediate products in the pipeline.

Some believe that L462 might be revealed in 2016, but Job 1 production is said to be on schedule for June 2017 at Solihull. The third generation Discovery is expected to use D7u, a lower cost version of JLR's Premium Lightweight Architecture (PLA).
