EPB

Ever wondered what your EPB brakes looked like. The Red Pearl has the usual squealing EPB brake issue so I cleaned them and guess what. The module that is located above the diff is knackered.

When you say its knackered, how can you tell? Mine went in for a new module, and came out with the old one still fitted and 'cleaned'

To be fair, its been fine for a while, but its done zero off-road since the 75 k service.

One common problem is that the manual adjustment isn't done correctly, causing the handbrake cables and actuator to 'over extend' (hence the screaming) trouble is, the Teves EPB isn't (IMO) sufficiently robust and contains too many plastic components for my liking - i'd happily pay an extra £100 - 200 at vehicle purchase, or as an 'upgrade' during warranty work to get a more robust unit Confused

I called J V Like last week and enquired about the noise and its cause. They said it may be dirty brake shoes/mechanism so I cleaned them. The screeching noise still occurs so I called them this morning and they said the module will have to be replaced and a new one is on order.

I have complained to LR about the issues both my D3s are having with the EPB. The first LR knob assistant informed me that there were no issues at all and he had never heard of a problem with the EPB Evil or Very Mad I hung up and called LR again spoke to a young lady and she is on the case Thumbs Up
Before the new module is fitted I want to have a good look at it and see if its possible to improve the water ingress problem the module seems to have Thumbs Up

don't think the problem is water ingress into the module, but the drum / shoes
There may be some capillary ingress up the brake cables to the EPB but this shouldn't be anything but a bit of fluid - i.e. no grit or road dirt
Personally I think the brake shoe assembly should be made either waterrtight or open - at least nothing or everything weill get in - if it's open, then it can be easily cleaned...

It's not beyond the scope of LR to design & implement a proper rotating seal design for the shoes and drum assembly - or at least provide a water hose connection point Thud
The wiring and low voltage issues have been resolved though with the 07MY and beyond - at least it's one issue less Wink

edit: Andrew - looking at the photo's it appears as if the shoes are at minimum adjustment - is this 'as fitted' or did you wind them in?

Mine is in tomorrow for screeeeeeeeeching EPB...it's occured twice in 5 days...
Over the last 7 days it has also locked on twice....
The first time it released after selecting reverse and "pushing" and the second time I had to remove the key and wait for the clock to go out then start up again....

This is how I found them, I adjusted them up once re-assembled.

I did have a good look at the position the disc relative to the backing plate. fair play they have got it very close.

I think that a rotating seal would do the job but it would have to endure extreme heat.

Teflon disc sitting between a silicon rubber 'U' seal would do the job - can be rated up to 1200 degrees C...

Mine came back from the dealer today. LRA guy said it should have a new actuator motor. Dealer acting on instructions from LR simply cleaned it and indicated that LR are starting to get funny about paying for EPB repairs where mud/water ingress is the problem. So that's now two failures and two clean and adjusts in three weeks.

Evil or Very Mad

I feel a strongly worded letter to LR coming on. What the Censored do they think they are playing at with this crap?
I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

Admitting there is a design issue with the EPB on an off road vehicle but shying away from covering the cost of it Rolling Eyes
