It was funny, but being in the new Freelander with its 'proper' hand break was very welcome.
I have always had my doubts about the EPB, and they seem to be confirmed.
I think Ten has it, so re-work and it could be many times better. The M-Power Express

But hold on a mo how big a problem is it as I guess the majority of people who take their D3 off road use this site from time to time, I guess around 40 as thats how many people have signed up for Rockingham (more like 100), bet LR have had a few more issues than that so is it related to off road use only

Well mine is...
Hey LR - sort it out!!!
it's the only damn thing that lets down a supremely capable vehicle, all the other minor issues have been sorted, on an 07MY manual I can't even disable it anymore

Mine's going in next Monday for this (among other things like uneven tyre wear). My one really did start before I went off-roading, so it's not just off-roading that does it.
Oh, and why does it only scream when other people are around, or if it's very early or very late Disco 5 HSE Lux

I took them off to get to the Park Brake shoes
I wanted to do exactly what you have done and clean out the dust, but when I quizzed the dealer about the EPB. They said you have to be careful taking off the rear discs as you have to disable the EPB first. So I didn't bother, AndrewS were they right do you need to disable it first? Did you do this and how do the discs come off. I've had the rear pads out and calipers off but just cleaned them up and put it back together.
P.S.the pictures are great.

Isolation procedure:-
CAUTION: Do not turn the ignition on when the parking brake service mode has been set, this will result in the parking brake being released from the service mode.
Enter the parking brake into the service mode.
Turn the ignition key to position II.
Apply, and hold, the footbrake.
Apply, and hold, the parking brake switch to the RELEASE position.
Turn the ignition key to position '0' and remove the key.
Release the footbrake.
Release the parking brake switch.
2 . Isolate the parking brake electrical circuit. Remove fuse number 8 from the BJB.
Having looked at the way the PB shoe assembly operates, I can only conclude that it's not necassarily lots of mud or dust that causes the problem but the amount of reversing usually involved in offroad driving causing the adjustment to be lost - this then causes the PB operating cables to over-extend until they reach the end of their traven inside the EPB actuator - hence the screeching... IF it was due to large amounts of mud or dust between the shoes and the drum, this would have the effect of reducing the travel (until the contamination was cleared) therefore shortening the distance the cable travels not extending it. The bedding-in procedure is intended to calibrate the EPB for new shoes and clear any build-up of mud or dust from the shoe surfaces not correct any misadjustment of the initial position of the shoes

So pulling the green plug from its socket at the back of the switch whilst travelling at 50 mph is not the correct way to isolate the EPB then
I think you could be onto something there Chap. The screeching occurs at the end of the "pull" . Last night I went back up my workshop and adjusted the EPB properly (thanks for the pm ) my EPB is now working and is quieter than a Nuns Fart.
So we think we have located the problem/issue. What now Its a simple job cleaning the shoes off and re-adjusting them. Or take the car to the dealers every time it occurs TBH I could clean and adjust mine in the time it would take me to drive to my dealer. In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

The adjustment procedure is not exactly simple....
An extract from the procedure follows
Quote:
Locate the parking brake shoe adjuster.
Remove the access plug.
Rotate the brake disc.
6. CAUTION: The direction of rotation must always be forward.
CAUTION: If the effort required is less than 40 Nm (30 lb.ft) tighten the adjuster by one click at a time.
Using a flat bladed screwdriver and a torque wrench on the halfshaft stake nut, rotate the brake shoe adjuster to extend it until the torque to turn the brake disc is 40 Nm (30 lb.ft).
7. CAUTION: The direction of rotation must always be forward.
CAUTION: The effort required to rotate the disc must be less than 90 Nm (66 lb.ft).
NOTE:
The effort required to rotate the brake disc from the halfshaft stake nut must be between 40 Nm (30 lb.ft) and 90 Nm (66 lb.ft).
Using a torque wrench on the halfshaft stake nut, make sure that the brake disc will still rotate forwards before 90 Nm (66 lb.ft) of torque is reached.
8. CAUTION: The parking brake adjuster must be rotated back EXACTLY 8 clicks. Failure to follow this instruction may result in damage to the parking brake system.
Rotate the adjuster back 8 clicks.
9. Loosen the wedge adjuster Allen screw half a turn.
10. Tap the brake disc lightly with a soft faced mallet, around the parking brake shoe location within the brake disc.
11. Tighten the wedge adjuster Allen screw to 6 Nm (5 lb.ft).
as an interim measure, then yes, it's something i'm happy to do but I think LR needs to seriously look at the issue and offer a 'fix' TBH, i'd be happy to pay for uprated parts if it meant that the EPB was reliable
