SGH - the audio quality on my set is fantastic, and the volume is very loud (using iPod classic with genuine apple composite cable) you have to get out of the back seat for the IR signal to fade.
Sounds to me like the audio input level is very low.
If you have the same problem with both headrests, it would have to be something common, ie. either the connector box, or the audio inputs.
Have you checked the connections to the connector box, and the little green plug that fits into the audio socket?
Perhaps you have a cable squashed against a ground?
stoopid question - do you have the headphones the right way round?
hope this helps
I am planning on refitting it all again and rechecking before I put it all back together.
I too am using ipod classic and iphone with genuine Apple composite cables.Defender 300Tdi 110 HCP - Keswick Green

Mine is being fitted today. Way to complicated for me so leaving it to the Pro's. Will let you know how it goes.
Been having another tinker about with mine but cant find anything that causes the issues that you describe SGH.
As Beben says the audio quality is pretty good and you have to get out of the car for it to go. I am not using any Ipod bits on mine...just the 'OLD' DVD technology. Hope the refit improves thingsCheers Ian

Just finished reinstalling the headrests.
Took the screens out of the FL ones and put them into the D3s not as hard as it sounds.
Will post picks of the process if people are still interested, do I just cut and paste them in?

You'll need to create a gallery and then paste in a hyperlink from there. The process is described somewhere in the FAQ's - a search should find it for you.
Pics of mine fitted in D3 headrests in my gallery...sorry didn't take any as I went along
brief description of process earlier in this thread...as sticks says its not that hard Cheers Ian

Mine are installed and working. Looks good and leather is perfect match. The system ran movies from my iphone with no issues.
Only downside is when you plug in all the cables to connect up your vid source it looks a bit messy. Still, mine will only be on at weekends so can live with that!!!
Big thanks to the Large One!!!

One out of two ain't bad....
Installed mine a fortnight ago and all was good. Both my little boys were entranced watching Thomas the Tank Engine in the back seats.
Went to turn them on today and only one screen works. It powers up (can get into the menu, adjust brightness etc) but no picture shows. Swapping the input leads between AV1 and AV2 confirms it is the screen, not the AV module (right hand headrest screen works with either AV1 or AV2, left-hand screen doesn't work with either).
Any suggestions for further diagnosing, or shall I contact Nick about a replacement ?? Going to be a pain shipping it back to UK from Down Under....

First start with removing the covers on the headrest, I found the easiest way is to pull down then insert a plastic level into the top and pull towards you as someone has already mentioned on here.
Abit of wiggling and it'll pop straight out
Now remove the trox screw
simply pull the arm away from the headrest, repeat to the other side, then lift the headrest up similar to any other car, there is a release clip just under the leather.
The leather on the headrest is held on using a clip on the bottom, squeeze it together and it comes apart.

Simply reach inside and pull the frame out of the foam.
You should end up something like this , put this to oneside and now get the other headrests out.
pull the plug out of the bottom of the headrest.
Stick a pair of needle nose pliers into the hole your trying to grab hold of a slim piece of metal
Just grab it and pull straight out, this secures the screen in place.

pry the plastic apart from the screen there are two clips one above the the green lever and one below, each side securing the screen in place.
It simply pops out, with a little levering,
unclip the connection and remove the screen
unscrew the four screws
pull the holder out of the head rest.
You're now left with the mounting plate remove the two securing screws. and pull this plate out of the headrest, you're now finished with the FL headrest.
place the metal plate onto the D3 headrest like so the bracket fits quite nicely. line the top of it with the crossbar on the D3 headrest.
You'll notice that the foam on the headrest stops the bracket fitting, so simply trim it down, do not cut past the nobbles in the next photo.
pull the foam away from the bracket and then remove the required foam, approx about 10 tops.
