place the bracket back onto the headrest frame.
Mark the two holes and the hole required for the cable, copy the one off the FL headrest.
Drill the holes and then cut the slot out, I'd suggest using a dremmel, I used a 6" grinder a bit overkill and not that surgical to be honest.
You'll need to enlarge the hole on the bottom of the headrest pole to allow the cable to thread through.
feed the cable through the hole
allow for the cable, connecting to the tv.
Screw the two black screws into position.
push the foam back onto the frame.
Squash the headrest and work the foam out of the leather,
It simply works its way out of the leather
Fit the headrest foam back over the frame and posts, feed it round until the headrest handle hole are inline with the cross bar.
once you're happy is in the correct place, push down onthe foam until you feel one of the fixing brackets throught the foam, this should help you gauge where to cut.
cut straight across to the welded seams of the foam, then repeat it on the top bracket, I tried using the black holder to outline a cut but found that simply cutting out a rectangle is better. Good kitchen or garden Scissors are better than a stanley blade
This is what you should end up with, cut a small notch above the fixing bracket to allow for the TV securing bar to go back in. now refit the black mounting box using the 4 fixing screws.
i found it easier to cut the bottom bit off for fitting later.

Put the foam back into the leather.
Push the headrest back into the foam. Take you're time with this ensuring that the crossbar lines up with the holes.
once you're finished push the remaining cut piece into the bottom of the headrest and then close it back up.
Now go have a coffee break prior to the next potential money costing step
find the edge of the black plastic mount
Take a deep breath and using a stanley knife cut a rectangle out about 20mm in from the edge, gives you something to play with.
you can now cut it down to fit back onto the black carrier, don't forget to cut a diagonal into the corners to allow the shaping, when you stick it down later,
don't cut right into the corner.
apply contact adhesive to the black mount and the leather and allow it to cure before sticking it down, ensure you pull the leater tight to ensure it looks good.
do the top and bottom first to ensure the leather sits right.
stick the side down last but do not let the seams go past the plastic mount as it restricts the tv screen fitting later.
Now let this dry for as long as you can, preferably 24hrs be hey your choice
fit the screen and now fit to the D3 and wait for the appreciation.

Well, I found my problem with the screen which wasn't working.
Given the screen would power up but wouldn't show a picture, I figured it might be a single broken wire. Inspired by sticks348 efforts, I pulled the screen and cable out of the headrest, and disconnected the cable from the screen so I could do a continuity check.
But before I got to this, I saw that one of the connecting pins on the screen itself was pushed in relative to all the others. I pulled the cover off the screen, pushed the pin back out so it was in line with all the others, then put it all back together. Success !
I'm guessing this damage occurred when the screens were first assembled. The fact it worked for a few weeks was probably due to intermittent contact between the pin and connector.
Now, on to completing the transfer of screens into the original LR headrests ! Thanks to sticks for his impressive write up

Sticks top write up. Sticks have you or has anybody else got dimesions of the headrest tubes, the dimensions of the the frame across etc and dimensions of the screens themselves. I am asking as looking to do this to the D4 but need to seeif screens will fit before I take the plundge. Any measurments associated with the headrest and screens would be great thanksMY17 D5 1st Edition Namib Orange

Russell - Some pics below of the headrest frame and black plastic mounting enclosure for the screens.
The headrest tubes are 12mm diameter, and about 165mm from outside of one tube to outside of the other (ie about 153mm centreline to centreline).
The screens are roughly 153mm wide by 110mm high.

If you like i could send you the freelander tubes, they are the exact dimensions of the D3 only without the top brace for the handles.

Brilliant 'photo story' Sticks. Makes me wish I had some of these so I could start butchering my own headrests!
I love this forum...

yes that would be ideal I could then work out if they will fit before I decide to take the plundge. I will PM you my address. Let me know what postage will be and I will send you some money, unless anybody can get them Kent direction via the D3 courier network. MY17 D5 1st Edition Namib Orange

I wonder if the freelander head rests will fit as a direct swap in the D4 as the D4 does not have handles on the sides.
Well mine dont anyway lol
What is the distance between the freelander tubes ?

buellbeast , that would be perfect if you could.
I can then compare sizes, im sure the D4 head rest is slighlty smaller than the D3 so it may just be a trim swap needed.

OK,
following on from the very helful "INSPIRING" pics above i have now removed my headrests from my Alquieda Beige plastic head rests and installed them on said brackets in the proper D3 head rests after filing out the bracket to thread the wire downn.
Now, got myself a CKO 3/4 din in car DVD player which i will mount under the passenger seat so the run of wire will have shortest route to underneath the sectret cup holders under the centre console.
The wiring i have more or less come to grips with except the spare "EARTH" bonding strap with the eyelets at either side !
Whats this for ? as the box has an eath ?
The DVD player looks complicated ! wires everywhere !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Anyway, i,ll keep you posted of my slow progress !
Work permitting ?
