Trying to identify a noise |
|
Hoping to ask help from the forum on a noise that has been bugging me for months and can't figure out what it is, and when it was in for the service the other week they couldn't hear it.
It's very faint normally but when passing a wall or close buildings it reflects back quite loud. It's sort of a metallic geiger counter sound. Lifting off the throttle it stops, but with partial throttle or just steady it appears, normally about 1500-2250 rpm.
I have searched the forum and found mention of turbo vanes, but I've added fuel additives and given it a blast and it's still there. Also mention of engine tinkling but I'm not sure it's that. I did have judder from the torque converter, just had the metal sump fitted and new fluids/dr tranny so the judder has gone for now but the noise is still there.
I have uploaded a bad video but you can just about hear it over the road/wind noise, mostly from 30 seconds in, and from 40 seconds in I lift on and off the throttle to cause the noise.
Fingers crossed someone will be able to hear it and recognise it, and that it's nothing too serious >.<
Thanks all,
Matt

Mine makes exactly the same noise.
I'll let you know in a few weeks if its gearbox related...
I was convinced it was turbo related, but now, I'm not so sure, as it only happens when the TC is locked... My D3 Build Thread

Thanks Disco_Mikey,
I did wonder if it was the torque converter, it'll need changing eventually due to judder (I did Dr tranny before the service but the judder stayed so the new fluid is only a short term fix I think) so I'm hoping its that rather than the gearbox itself
Thanks again

I get a tinkling on light throttle and tick over, noise disappears when the revs are higher than idle and you lift of the throttle... I put it down to injector noise... it sounds the same as 99% of Range Rover sports and D3/D4's I hear driving around... but it doesn't sound exactly the same as in your video Admin on Facebook Discovery 3 & 4 Ownersgroup

I diagnose a case of Land Rover ownership. It's like tinnitus. You can never quite get the fear of some sort of grinding/scraping out of your head. VIN: A175A328***

Mine does this too, it has got progressively louder over the last year or so but other than being annoying it doesn't seem to cause any problems.
I'm convinced it's the turbo as the ability to control it with the throttle would make sense...
There are many threads on the subject, none conclusive but it appears to be common.

Have you considered the heat shields by the rear exhaust box. Mine have lost the two nuts securing the bottom part and the D3 makes a very similar sound. There is also another heat shield somewhere near the rear prop shaft that was mentioned in another prop shaft removal.

Thought I might add that this odd noise only really came about after the brake servo/vacuum pump pipework mod and software update was carried out at LR.... to me it seems louder on the drivers side (open window) than from the passenger turbo side... It would be interesting to know who has this noise with the pipe work mod and if anyone hasn't had the mod carried out yet if they still get the same noise?... I was sure that this was gearbox related until i drove RRS TDV8 and SC that dont do it. Many examples driven. They have the same box...... so im a bit confused

I recently bought our 2004 Hse auto with 105k on the clock, it appears to make the same noise, makes it on lifting the throttle lightly, and then again by pressing the throttle lightly again, goes off again on increasing the throttle more. I'd guess something on the front, more noticeable when driving past walls etc that reflect the sound back. Sounds almost like an actuator or something responding to the throttle position rather than road speed related.
I'd be interested if anyone has come to a definitive conclusion what my get be the cause.

Haven't had mine looked at yet, doesn't seem to be getting worse (tempting fate). Still hope it's just the torque converter, need to get it booked in for a number of things to be checked

I had the same noise (more noticeable between buildings and narrow lanes) then I had the TC repaired with a new one and the noise has gone altogether

I had a sound similar to this, then a few weeks later the middle heat shield dropped down and was only holding on with one fixing, worth a look be nice if that's all it was.

Mine's done this forever... TDV6 RRS... 236k km, lots of people have the same noise. I very much doubt it's something to worry about. 2008 RRS TDV6 - Chawton White/Black/Lined Oak - 20's, h/k, sunroof - 350K KM.

Turbo I think, many have had the same noise for a long time. Some have had turbo replaced, even under warranty for the noise.
Not heard of any catastrophic failures though. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€
