Similar to 'Mark One'......I had it on my Disco2, it was eventually traced to a split / crack on the steel exhaust holding strap. After 6 months of being the laughing stock of the street.....under the car every weekend !!! Life always good with a Landy

Here is the latest update regarding the noise I'm trying to identify.
I have a friend with a 2005 auto disco who has a similar noise to the one on my 2004 Disco 2.7 auto hse, his has 130k on the clock but the noise is much worse.
He took his car to an auto gearbox specialist who pronounced his gearbox as being fine, but said the noise was coming from the turbocharger.
He has just changed the turbo, and the noise is exactly the same, so its not that!
The symptoms are, the noise is like an actuator or spring moving like a 'zzzzzzzt' noise (sorry for the description, but it's a strange sound), it happens only when the car is warmed up and moving, and is more noticeable with the passenger window open and passing a wall to reflect the sound, the sound appears at slight throttle openings, either backing slightly off the throttle or slightly pressing it, the noise disappears on larger throttle movements.
I'm sure somebody must have come across this before as there are quiet a few hits to what sounds similar problems on the net, but nothing definitive as to the solution.
The try changing this and that is an expensive route when it's 700 quids worth of turbo or 2k's worth of auto gearbox.
Any help greatfully recieved my mate is desperate to sort his problem out.

Mine makes exactly the same noise.
I'll let you know in a few weeks if its gearbox related...
I was convinced it was turbo related, but now, I'm not so sure, as it only happens when the TC is locked...
Pretty sure I had the same noise too, and it's also gone with a new TC. Current: Discovery 3 06MY (55 reg) HSE Auto Zambezi Silver Allisport Fast Road Intercooler, V8 Brakes, Silicone IC Hoses, EGRs Blanked, Remapped, De-Cat pipe, FBHIC

I'm guessing mine isn't gearbox related, being a manual. I suspect my noise is just modern diesel clattering. It's more noticeable now the front diff isn't howling at me. At what point do you stop hunting noises, and just live with them? Freelander SE 2005 Auto.

In my case, you live with the howling diff for 45k miles until you can't take any more My D3 Build Thread

I couldn't live with a noisy diff any more. So I spent £25 on a new Timken bearing and drive shaft oil seal and fixed the blasted thing. Getting the diff out was easy, replacing the knackered bearing was easy too. Refitting the diff was a bit of a barstuard. It's done now and all quite. However now I can hear a slight grumbling from the NSF wheel bearing instead Freelander SE 2005 Auto.

I've just been for a ride in my friends disco to listen to his noise, it's identical to the one on mine.
To me it appears to be from pretty far forward on the car, so I'm guessing it's not gearbox related.
I've borrowed his electronic stethoscope and am going to try and narrow it down.
We have both had the same thought, could it be the egr valves chattering?
Both our cars have had the egr valves blanked, but I guess they still operate, could the noise be them chattering.
Are any of the technical guru's able to comment on if it's operation fits the symptoms, i.e it never happens when the engine is stone cold, after a mile or so it starts, it only happens on light lifting of the throttle or light throttle increase, it pretty much responds to change of throttle instantly, certainly before the revs alter.
Any comments anyone?

I think this is the same noise that I have had for a while. Like a zipping or whizzing noise at the point where the throttle is neither on nor off. If I lift off the throttle off the noise stops and if I accelerate the noise stops. However, this evening I am pulling a heavy trailer around 3.5 ton and sometimes she is producing the noise under heavy pull. It gets pretty bad. It will stop if I lift off the throttle and then apply it again. My feeling is that it's the turbo but I'd love to know for sure. I'd hate for the turbo to go to pieces under full pull! Plus, I can only hear it with the drivers window down at lowest speed. I haven't tried the pass window.
It certainly has the same symptoms, is your car an auto?. I think mine could be worse towing our caravan up very steep hills.
I've started trying to narrow down the location using my mates electronic stethoscope. So far the top half of the engine has no signs of the noise, the egr valves certainly don't appear to be the source (shame, that would have been less expensive to fix!). The loudest source so far has been with a microphone on the side heat shield by the turbo in the N/s front wheel arch. I'm moving on to the gearbox, bellhousing areas hopefully today or tomorrow.
I've managed to record the sound on my phone, but I'm still trying to figure out how to post it on here, if anybody knows how I'd appreciate some instructions.
I'd think carefully about swapping the turbo yet, my friends nice shiny new turbo he had fitted at the weekend hasn't changed his problem at all. Swapping parts like that or a gearbox is a very expensive way of finding out how to fix it!
The mechanic who changed his turbo has told him since he first looked at it a few months back, he's had half a dozen discos in for various problems and they all have made the same noise, so it appears to be pretty common, I'm surprised there doesn't seem a definitive cause identified on the forum.
I have used my friends electronic stethoscope to make recording of the noise, the loudest I have found it so far is with a microphone attached in the nearside wheel arch on to the small heat shield that gives side access to the turbo.

If it wasn't for my friend having replaced his turbo at the weekend and it not have made the slightest difference, i'd have been pretty convinced the problem was the turbo, but must something else in that vicinity.
Sorry if the sound file doesn't work, its my first attempt to get something like this in a post.
Sorry but it didn't work, the mp3 file is in my gallery if anyone can get it to play in someway.

Had my 2008 HSE for three years, it started a couple of months after I bought it, then stopped. I dont think the multiple things that have gone wrong so far include a fix for it. Sounded like a metallic steam train, only really noticed it when driving between buildings at work. Current - Range Rover TDV8 2007 HSE.

Martindg, I'm following this carefully waiting for you to narrow it down with your stethoscope - I have been meaning to do the same for ages with a radio mic but haven't got round to it.
My car has done this for ages but now it's not just on light throttle but most of the time - it's a horrible noise.
