I just disconnected my egr cables from my 2004 HSE, on a test drive I can't say it made any difference to the noise, my egr valves are blanked and seem to be knackered from the values shown by my iidbluetooth.
The first test I did after my mate changed his turbo to try and get rid of the noise and failed, was to put a microphone from his electric stethoscope on each of the egr valves and I didn't get any sign of the noise on that test either.

Thanks for trying Martindg.. Well that blows the theory of the dealer and Indie... my sound is exactly the same as the MP3, both were adamant it was the EGR.
The message from both was it was a common problem...
Oh well will I will give it a try when I get back just in case.... unless we have any further updates. Of course it could be the TC as some have said earlier in the post.
Hope its not the TC as we are all in for expensive bills!Owning a Discovery 3 is like dating a model.. a firm body and shape, wow.. the ride is fantastic > for this your wallet can take a pounding and you worry about being deflated at any time...

I had the same noise as the youtube clip, mine was definitely Gearbox/TC related as it only happened when the TC was locked. Had some other box issues so replaced the whole unit with a nice shiny new one and goes what. The noise has gone.
I'll give you some advice from my experience on this - Instead of perpetually guessing what it could be (i've been there, done that) and used garages who told me it couldn't possibly be the TC (wasting money in the process) as they apparently do not make that noise, try and get some diagnostic equipment and take the car for a drive. Monitor the TC status and see if there is any correlation between the status of the TC and the noise.
Good Luck

We are going round and round in circles here...
Thanks Disco_Mikey - I saw your previous posts but I think for all of us with this noise, the cost implications are significant when all the gearbox specialists, dealers and Indies tell us all it is not the gearbox/TC so double checking does no harm, also understanding the long term consequential damage if any to the gearbox.
The worrying part having researched the web fully including experts stripping down the TC no one can identify what is causing the noise with actually the TC stripped in question appeared in relatively good order. The only statement I can find from RRsport site is the following:-
The technical department at Land Rover have advised us that this low engine speed resonance is from the torque converter and is normal, their statement is as follows:
‘There is a situation at low speed light throttle where the Torque Converter can resonate. This is a Normal Opertating Characteristic of the vehicle.’
It would be good if the position could be clarified by a gearbox expert for all with the noise who do low mileage.Owning a Discovery 3 is like dating a model.. a firm body and shape, wow.. the ride is fantastic > for this your wallet can take a pounding and you worry about being deflated at any time...

We shall have to wait and see if those of us with new TCs find that the noise returns when given more appropriate maintainence. It could just be a factor of normal wear, that wouldn't necessarily progress further. Yeah, agree with both previous posts, also if it is normal, I could spend 1100 quid on a new converter that also has the normal noise.
At least it's sounding more definite that it is the converter so that's a major step forward, too late for my mate with his unnecessary new turbo it may save others from going down that route.

What's more interesting is they also said the below about that very same 2006 RRS:
"We have found no fault with any of the components and we have compared your vehicle with others of the same model and noted the same resonance at the same level of RPM in those vehicles. The technical department at Land Rover have advised us that this low engine speed resonance is from the torque converter and is normal..."
A&B Automatics in Melbourne said to me if I have to replace the TC/recondition the trans because continuation of shuddering post flush they would replace the TC with one that is less susceptible to glazing.
Not sure how true that is but if anyone else is due to get TC/reco trans done and has noise let us know if it also fixes it
Its good this thread exists cause the sound does sound an awful lot like turbo rattle.

In this thread are posts from Disco-Mikey and others that state that it does fix the problem (the noise), I had the shudder only in 3rd gear going up a hill so it is slightly different to what the RRS post indicates. A double flush and tube of Dr Tranny fixed the shudder but metallic noise on light throttle still exists and I assume that is what the Landrover technical department are referring.
As an Engineer by trade it would be good to understand if this is genuine resonance or metallic components rattling.... the noise on my rrsport seems to be getting worse, its doing it on acceleration now and sometimes when slowing, also with light throttle at steady speed. as a matter of fact it does it whenever it wants to it seems, I find myself constantly feathering the throttle to keep the noise going, its now like a game between me and the noise,,,

Mine does it in drive as well and i can get the noise to stick feathering the throttle as well so its not getting worst its just harder to hear i think over the engine.
The fact I cant really hear it in during a stall test and only in high gears feathering the throttle when the TC ahould def be locking makes me think its the TC clutch plate thats resonating and not the pump or stator.
Glazing is common for this TC so id say its possibly resonance from the glazing on clutch plate. That glazing combined with old oil causes shuddering, noise, slip and hunting. With new oil you may still experience an occasional slip and you still get the noise but you dont get the shudder/hunting.
How long the oil will last who knows but as mine is still occasionally slipping i think i need to start saving for new TC and rebuild of trans (possibly).
This would show with the IIDtool which i will get soon. Any noise from a modern TC seems to be its death knell
I've read all these posts carefully and combined with Mikey's assertion that it's the TC I am inclined to agree.
The noise on mine was pretty much audible at any road speed (depending on throttle position) and matched the "rattle/ buzz/ grinding/ dragging chain/ ball bearings in a tin" noise that has been described in so many different ways.
I also had TC shudder begin to return recently so that would clearly suggest a TC problem. Car has done 140,000 miles.
Due to the fact that to get anything fixed here costs an arm and a leg I decided to put some Dr Tranny in to keep the shudders at bay for a while longer. When I went to buy some I noticed Lubeguard also make a product called ATF Protectant which not only gets rid of shudder but also "Eliminates clutch chatter".
I've never heard of clutch chatter but that would nicely describe the type of noise if, in fact, it comes from then TC.
Anyway 3 weeks ago I added the ATF Protectant. The shudder is gone as expected but also the buzzing noise has reduced by around 80-90%. It's still there with the same sound and resonance but I really have to listen hard for it.
A worthwhile fix (don't know how long it will last) if you have this problem.
