Hi Schwede,
Thanks for the update, funnily enough I was driving SWAMBO's car today and had the windows open and ear out for the noise, it is still there but appears to have reduced in its intensity after the Dr Tranny.
Like you I am reluctant to spend out on a new TC for SWAMBO as she does little mileage and the car is a backup to mine and will become a donor in severe circumstances until I can get second hand parts to repair. So SWAMBO's car is the poor cousin!
Had another issue with SWAMBO's car (air suspension and vibration) which I have put a post in technical and am awaiting a reply.
Keep us posted... Owning a Discovery 3 is like dating a model.. a firm body and shape, wow.. the ride is fantastic > for this your wallet can take a pounding and you worry about being deflated at any time...

Hi, I had a transmission mega flush and added some Dr tranny just for precaution a month or so ago,I also have the suspected TC noise, do you think it will be ok to add ATF Protectant as well or would I just be asking for trouble using to many additives.

We need a qualified transmission guru to answer that...

Well its happened...
Once the flush had happened back in September the shuddering and hunting disappeared but occasional slip still happened in low gears only after 2 min's of driving though along with some rather nasty clunking.
Literally just had the xmas tree lights on dash (a bit early I might add ) transmission faults, limited gears, the dreaded "F" and drove home in limp home mode with severe slipping. Did a reset and now slipping is less severe but with every change in lower gears it slips moderately without fail. I think I heard my credit card scream...
So the next place the car is going is to transmission specialist and it will be on the back of a tow truck - yes its that bad! Looks like I'll be getting a reconditioned gearbox and new TC very soon hopefully it gets rid of that bloody noise that's all I can say!
Watch this space cause its nearly Christmas I need to get it in ASAP.

*UPDATE*
So car drives a lot better now with trans reco and new TC. Most of that weird metallic noise has gone but i can still hear what appears to be a turbo type noise which i can only assume is the turbo vanes reacting to sudden drop in pressure (only when abruptly lifting accelerator) but its really quiet and i struggle to hear it windows down or up unlike the rather loud and obnoxious metal grinding.
The noise happens same times as when the TC noise did and its actually very similar its only since having my TC fixed i can differentiate the two sounds as obviously not being same thing.
Its no wonder so many techs ive spoken to think its solely the turbo cause it partially is i think.
Thankfully the turbo type noise is quiet and not annoying at all.
So all good now and i can confirm another thing you can tell your TC is screwed is the insane amounts of engine braking (holding gear to 2500-3000 rpm down steep roads) has gone completely now. Which i did see someone else confirm as well.

So a couple of thousand miles since oil change and Dr tranny - noise still persists and has not got worse, the judder has completely gone.
I have two D3's and the gearbox changes are just as smooth on both so I am reluctant to change the TC. It would be really nice if someone could give us all peace of mind that this is normal as has been stated on the RR forum thread as just resonance of the clutch. I have this annoying noise too, that goes away when you release accelerator, or press it more.
I had always thought the noise was a "vacuum" or "suction" type of gurgling noise.
What made you suspect TC and mechatronic, and how much did you end up paying?
Thanks

How is it possible for you/me/anyone to tell when the TC is locked?
Thanks
aidnoakes wrote:I had the same noise as the youtube clip, mine was definitely Gearbox/TC related as it only happened when the TC was locked. Had some other box issues so replaced the whole unit with a nice shiny new one and goes what. The noise has gone.
I'll give you some advice from my experience on this - Instead of perpetually guessing what it could be (i've been there, done that) and used garages who told me it couldn't possibly be the TC (wasting money in the process) as they apparently do not make that noise, try and get some diagnostic equipment and take the car for a drive. Monitor the TC status and see if there is any correlation between the status of the TC and the noise.
Good Luck

I think you can do it with the IIDTOOL but i dont have one to confirm. Maybe someone else who has one can confirm?. They are around $500 for us to import from UK in AUS. Mechanics can probably do it with an autologic unit too i think i paid like $80 AUD for a reading for MAP sensor issue ao that could be a cheaper option for you.

To be honest i wouldnt do it just for this noise. However if you get any slipping when warm take it straight to a transmission shop because once it starts slipping your transmission is a ticking time bomb. The longer you leave it the more damage you will do and you can avoid a costly tow.
Mine only did it once or twice a week (very easy to miss) and in four months it failed catastrophically.

Hi!
I have also got thise loud metallic sound, but for my case I think it is the turbocharger. The noice comes around the rpm when turbo kick in and increases in sound while turbo pressure is reaching the top. The sound is there from cold engine and in all speeds. And as I said, it follows the turbo pressure perfect, so it must be the turbo. Sound is gone when I step off the accelerator.
But for all you other guys. Have you had a diagnostic for fault codes? I have had a couple of faultcodes on the turbo (pressure) wich guides me to the turbocharger.
I will put on my GoPro camera outside the car to record the sound. Ill come back for it so you can compare the sound.
My D3 is a 05 model with 267 000km. Never changed turbo before.
Autobox works smooth, no slip. Had a complete flush at LR garage @ 205 000km. So soon up for a new flush (recommended between 60 - 80 000km).
So have your faults read first. Might give you an indicator of whats wrong !

I'n not sure we are Mikey...
This problem has been much discussed and undiagnosed for ages and came with a mountain of theories.
A long time ago you suggested it was probably the TC and after many people (including myself) went round in circles it all comes back to that being absolutely spot on.
After I speculated (with little knowledge of the inner workings of the TC) that the noise could be what Lubeguard call "clutch chatter" and used their additive the noise has been reduced to almost nil. Previously it was the only thing I could hear!
I also know my TC will need to be replaced at some point soonish as it had the judders, cured by oil change and since has had an occassional wobble, slip and fluctuating rpm - cured by the Dr Tranny additive. All buying time I admit.
Also if we read carefuly through the responses on the different threads, replacing the turbo does not get rid of the noice, replacing the TC does.
So, well done on your excellent diagnosis - we all should have listened to you in the first place.

Well, my point was that I dont think everyone suffers the same problem. Unfortunately I cant open the mp3, so cant hear the sound to compare.
But in my case, if it was the TC, wouldnt the sound persist through all rpms, not only within the turbo boost range ?
I have changed 2 of 3 IC hoses with silicone. Could a crack in the small turbo IC hose cause this metallic sound? I have no smoke, but have had faultcodes on turbo pressure.
And as I mentioned, this sound have recently revieled itself, and I have 267 000km on my engine and gearbox. Never had a sound before.
