Hairy Moment - Engine Fault Warning |
|
Have had this problem 2 or 3 times before usually when towing but yesterday was a bit hairy to say the least.
Heading down the A1 yesterday with a large box trailer on I was overtaking an artic. Just as the trailer was half way past the front of the lorry i thought the trailer brakes had come on, then saw the 'Engine Fault' warning light come on. I now had the lorry alongside me but couldn't accelerate past him plus he wondered WTF i was doing.
Had to brake and pull in behind lorry but by now I was down to 28mph with foot to the floor. Had to go another mile before I could pull off A1, now down to less than 20mph at this point which is a bit with Fri afternoon traffic.
Pulled over, switched off, key out, back on, away i went.
When specialist last checked for faults it came up with 2 for airflow meter. Think this was the same but gonna get it looked at as don't fancy that on the A1 again.
Anybody else had similar? Is it a replacement under warranty?? 11 RR 4.4 TDV8

Andy - what was the fault code? P2199 by any chance...?
been having this since May 2009. Been at the dealer 5 times for replacement mass air flow sensor etc. Recently been getting HDC/Special Programs Off at the same time the Engine System Fault message comes up. With the ESF, no power loss etc. With the HDC Off, then max speed of 50 km/h.
The HDC/Special Programs Off only comes up once, the ESF message flashes on/off and remains until ignitio is reset.
Some related links with info and my saga are here.

Check for:
Mass air flow sensor failure.
Contaminated plugs/sockets
Short circuiting wire...
I'd be interested to know what your fauld codes are and what the outcome is...mine goes back to the dealer on Monday (6th time ) for a main ECU test and possible replacement... The next American ex-pat that calls it a "truck" is going to find out what 2.7 tons feels like on their foot...
Club "yes, I too have had the EGR's replaced..."
Club "yes, I too have had the compressor replaced..."
Club "yes, I too once had the car at the dealer for a couple of weeks nearly 4 weeks over 4 weeks...5 weeks"
Club "yes, I too have had EPB failure..."
Club "yes, I too get mysterious bings and bongs..."

Not a solution and pulling a trailer may be difficult, but when it happens try to put the car in neutral, switch off the car and then on, takes one second and should clear the fault(do not remove the key!!) works better if slightly downhill.

Yes, but probably better than brake, pull in and drive a couple of miles at 20 mph on the same busy highway

Engine system fault is caused by either low fuel pressure, faulty injector, blown turbo hose or duff turbo...
Best bet is to get the fault codes read, then go from there...
And, FWIW, if it does happen again on the road , come off all the pedals, and cycle the igniton. Again, takes a bit of balls but once you have done it once, it becomes 2nd nature
EDIT: Will also happen if you have LED's fitted to the trailer lighting My D3 Build Thread

small missing point from your post, if it's an auto make sure it's not in drive - it won't restart.
P.s when my EGR valves failed I had exactly this problem on an overtake and then when pulling out to cross a busy part of the A5. No fun doing 5mph with eddie stobbart skiddng straight at you .... "To finish first, one first has to finish ...."

or....
I had this happen, both with the TDV6 and TDV8, going through the Gottard tunnel(Switzerland) in winter, outside temperature -10c, inside the tunnel 25c, some sensors get confused by the big temperature change I guess.....

Doesnt matter, as the gearbox is still driving the engine, same as it would in a manual
Ignition off, then ignition on again (only to pos 2 though!) My D3 Build Thread

I get the same engine system fault intermittently (3 or 4 times a month), even after having the turbo and MAP sensor replaced last year and half a dozen attempts to fix the issue at the dealers. The system fault will occur as I have just reached the brow of of hill in 6th (auto) at about 60mph when I ease off the accelerator to maintain steady speed. It does it more frequently when I am towing or I have the vehicle loaded. I am getting way too familiar with bus stops, laybys, side roads, grass verges and farm gates all round Scotland!
It is booked in on 16th Feb. I am determined to get to the bottom of this, even if the dealers are not!

That's exactly what mine used to do. (usually by flicking it off cruise control)
Dealer (Riders) did eventually manage to cure it, but I'm afraid i can't say for sure how.
Mass Airflow sensor changed a couple of times, not convinced that was it. Only thing I do know is that I've had no problems since the HP fuel pump was changed on recall. Coincidence?? Long succession of Disco's since 2001...

I've also had the HP fuel pump changed under Recall but has done it twice since then...
