Tailgate hint/tip
Thanks for this post. Have just spend an hour sorting my tailgate.
When you have carefully prised back the trip, I found the following a very quick way of unlatching the upper door.
1) use a large, flat-bladed screwdriver and lever the actuator mechanism outwards just enough to see the hole and the wire inside the mechanism
2) Use a coat-hanger with the end curled into a tight loop. Feed this into the hole and behind the wire. Hook the wire and pull it towards you.
Clunk - click every time...

So I'm going in for some preventative maintenance on mine next time it stops raining. This post has been great, but I'm not sure where to (or to what) fix an emergency cable pull (parachute style) and where to feed it through. I'm happy that the rip cord remains in the boot.

Just attached mine to cable and secured pull end on edge of carpet with tape to prevent accidentally use. Did have photo in gallery.

Thanks Rob1969, I see it now, I thought the green around the fixing was a cable tie. Didn't see the cord at the bottom. Nice one.

So I took it all to bits today and found the end of my cable looked liked this . So it must have been replaced previously. My question is, is this the new L-piece that should outlast the car, or will it decay over the next few years and snap? It looks and feels like stainless steel but I'm not sure. Can anybody tell by just looking at the photo?

Also, the thing that took me the longest was pulling the the electrical connectors. They have a little push tab on the back

Okay, thanks. I left a ripcord installed if either packs up in the future
If anybody can tell if its the new up-rated one from the pic I'd still like to know. Looks to me like the chamfered body may be a clue. Anybody?

I had the same issue.
Carpet peeled first.
Use a few broad flat tool to get the bit to pop out and be carefully if it's really cold as plastic will be more brittle.
Ease the top bit out, once you have popped all the top out you still only get about 4 inch gap.
The bit you need ispecial on the lower left side under the sticky protector strip. I used a screwdriver to hold it open. Then hooked the detached cable and pulled it clear. Then used a pair of long nosed pliers to pull to the left against where the cable enters the mechanism. The bit had snapped off so I cut down a couple of steel shelf angle brackets and made a retainer. It works mint

Great write up!
I had mine replaced about 3 years ago at about 80K. I was wondering when did the latest cable end come out. Also LR should have made a latch to open these tailgates from the inside like on the D1 & D2's. Everyone should have that option added once they have this cable replaced or repaired.
