Mine is an Auto, regularly get 32 to 34 MPG with no modifications. I do tend to drive no more than 60mph ( its cos I am a Artic driver - not used to speed ), but I also use the switchable box alot, tend to change upto 5th or 6th way before the auto would.... Whistle

I just don't get this!?!?!? I know you Artic drivers hone your throttle/gear control skills to perfection to maximise mpg but how can you regularily get 32-34mpg in a D3 Auto when the best I have ever achieved plodding on cruise along the motorway was 24.59mpg (manual calc hence accurate unlike fuel computer on dash). How can the difference be so huge? You're not the only one getting 30+ with an Auto. It's just not fair Big Cry

Driving style has a lot to do with it, and I'm not just talking about being light footed. Someone who goes through lots of brake pads will ultimately be getting worse MPG than someone who doesn't. Anticipation is the name of the game and long steady journeys (even at 90mph!) will give better mpg than stop/start motoring.

JMC. That makes total sense but I don't understand how if I set Cruise to 65mph on a clear level(ish) motorway (was an experimental and very boring speed) on a still, dry, cool winter day and cover approx 110 miles, how come I only get 24.59mpg. I'm not complaining (just jealous Rolling Eyes) but the different mpg's between the same standard auto vehicles driven gently simply seems huge. If I shoved it into 6th and reduced to 50mph on cruise then it may improve a bit but not buy 7-9mph which is a 28-34%.

Am I getting a bit too obsessed by this Embarassed

JMC has that spot on TBH, as a Artic driver your driving style does change, and all the economy comes from Anticipation. We read the roads constantly, like yourself probably, but I read them as if I am still pulling an artic. Remembering I drive also for work a maximum of 56mph and when I am in the D3 it seems like I am rushing when I do 70mph.

I tend not to accelerate hard, mainly use the switchable Auto to keep the revs lower and just glide along safely. If I wanted a sports car then I would have brought one, if I wanted top economy I would'nt have purchased a brick with wheels.

Its just driving styles, nobody will be the same. Auto's a hills in cruise control kill MPG, thats the best advice I can give. If you wanna acheive 30 Mpg take it out of cruise anticipate the hill by building up speed graduly and then glide up. Its how I do it Thumbs Up

Potentially yes!

I started out worrying about the fuel economy but soon realised that it was better to enjoy the car. Having just purchased two new V8's (FFRR & Audi RS4) I've decided to take that mantle to a new level. 8) Laughing

I was averaging 22.66 mpg (miles divided by fuel in tank) - HSE diesel auto with no mods at all. Had a remap in Jan and the average over past 1238 miles was 25.65 mpg. Not a huge improvement but it helps.

mpg

firs MPG test fillup took 73 somethin liters... managed to get 485 miles before reserve light came on
if calculated right that gives me around 50+ km per gallon (no computer base 5 seat D3), mixed city, highway traffic jam driving,
pretty good for 2490 something kg of the beast Wink
should be even better once received BAS unit Smile

Just had two software upgrades: Transmission and variable turbo vane ones.
Fuel consumption definately better. Very Happy Thumbs Up

I suspect software has alot to do with consumption. I had a D3 between Sept 05 and Jan 08 and I entered every fuel fill in a spreadsheet and tracked MPG for each tank and a cumulative to date. After my 1st service I noticed a drop in MPG, which at the time I put down to the onset of cold weather, however I've recently added a graph to the spreadshet and the drop clearly coinsides with the 1st service - Services are shown by the big red squares. I now suspect that the drop was caused by a LR software upgrade!!

Get some Black Electricians Tape - Stick it over where it reads MPG and stop worrying and enjoy your D3!

You've bought it, you love it - life's too short.
