England 2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 S Auto Zermatt SilverDiscovery 3

Over my first 3 weeks and 550 miles mainly 50 - 60 mph runs of approx 10 miles with some hills I am getting an average of 25 mpg on the trip computer.
Town driving is a killer though.
Is that what everyone is using? Is it fairly accurate?
Sounds like I am doing quite well

It's about right for a new engine, especially if you're doing a lot of town driving.

Auto or Manual?

Sorry it's an auto.
What should it gradually improve to?

Some auto's never get much better than that but many do. Depends on type and style of drving a lot

Mine's manual but I'm sure some of the Auto drivers will jump in and let you know what they're getting

Hello Cliff, I average 28/29 taking it easy on short journeys averaging about 15miles but not too much traffic. Sustained motorway cruising at 70 takes the average up to 32 easy & had it up to 36.9 whith slippers on & running out of gas, but if you start booting it drops pretty quick. Auto 12000miles.

I've had my HSE (auto) just over a month now. Over the first 2 fill-ups I averaged 25.38mpg overall, with local/town driving of mainly short(ish) journeys.

Third fill up was a 575m round trip of mainly motorway driving with cruise set at 65mph most of the time, on this trip I got 29.96mpg.

Note my figures are based upon full to full fuel measurements and not he trip computer. In my experience the trip computer is optimistic, on my 1st tank the trip computer showed 26.7mpg whilst my calculation was 25.41mpg and on the long run the trip computer was showing 31.1mpg but my manual calculation was 29.96mpg.

Forget fuel consumption!!
Whack it into Sport/Drive, and give it some welly....
It`s amazing how rock steady and precise this car is pushing 80+, on my local twisty A-B roads. Obviously when its nice and quiet, not to offend other road users......(much)! Bow down Adriatic Blue
Nearly one year on and still lovin it..

Auto Express M ileage Marathon

Has anbody read this weeks Auto Express article on fuel consumption?
Basically they took a car from each of the different sectors of the market (i.e. 4x4s, family hatchbacks etc.) and tested them for fuel economy.
In conclusion, the mpg figure given is on average 17-20% higher than what you will actually get.
For the Discovery, the annual fuel cost will be £400 more expensive than the figure quoted by LR. Here are the facts:

<Auto Express Issue No. 881 pp.46 - 55>

(Land Rover Discovery 3 TDV6 HSE)

URBAN:

Auto Express = 17.8mpg
Official Figures = 21.4mpg

EXTRA-URBAN:

Auto Express = 25.6mpg
Official Figures = 32.3mpg

COMBINED:

Auto Express = 24.2mpg
Official Figures = 27.2

ANNUAL FUEL COST:

Auto Express = £3, 622
Official Figures = £3,222

Poor fuel consumption? Compare.

Try buying a Lexus RX400H. For those who don't know , it's the Hybrid of the new generation.Locate a dealer and try a test drive. Compare fuel consumption with the Disco3 and then you tell me. A 3.3 petrol engine along with electric motors, 0-100 at 7 secs, and consumption far far better than the 2.7 diesel LR.

If fuel consumption is such a deciding factor why look at anything with an engine over 1200cc?

Towing and its consumption is at best only equal to the D3, not sure what it does round Tescos car park though
