England 2014 Discovery 4 3.0 SDV6 XS Auto Corris GreyDiscovery 4

When I tried to replace my alternator first time I had to take it to my Indy as I just couldn't get the fan off.

I made 3 tools out of 3mm steel and all of them tore under the pressure of trying to get it off Big Cry

But now that it has been off, it's pretty easy to get off with a 2ft adjustable spanner and a lump hammer Thumbs Up

Never struggled TBH. I have a pair of these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Land-Rover-Visco...337af2c81a

Sometimes a little tight, but takes them off no bother.

If they are not an option, a long chisel and hammer to shock it loose.

If all else fails, an air chisel will take it off Thumbs Up

BAS fan spanners could roll your car over they're so strong. I also broke some homemade spanners before doing the sensible thing and buying from pete.
I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

What ever you do, don't put a Kenlowe on - they won't work with the D3 - the car sends a signal to the fan to speed it up if required as determined by ATF temperature, engine temperature, AC pressure, road speed etc.

And if anyone tells you they are more efficient, they are deluded.

Kenlowe is an electric fan. It is reputed to save fuel when compared to a viscous fan because when its off, it draws no power, however, it is controlled by a thermostat - so is on/off and not variable, doesn't take into account AC demands, gearbox oil demands etc. And a viscous fan when idle takes sweet fa of power from the engine when the viscous clutch is open. I've just replaced mine and have been watching the live data for the demand and fan speed - the latter, once the initial roar is over is rarely more than 1/2 engine speed - at idle I've seen the speed as low as 240rpm.

The only advantage of an electric fan is that you can override it on easier and it can be located in alternate positions - so they are often used in race/rally cars to the fans can be kept on when the car is stopped - they can also be put over the remote intercoolers etc.

They have there place, just not on most normal modern cars, and definitely not to save power Laughing
