Sounds like they're a good recommendation - do they post out?

Always good to hear about a good value supplier to add to the list....

I so feel your pain... for me its need versus want. I need so few things, but want so many - tyres are just another "want" on the list that is pretty damn long!

I have run a set of Duratracs on my D3 for almost two years now and they have worn really well. They are on 17s, and are surprisingly quiet, good off road, and being a taller profile absorb potholes/curbs quite well. They are very poor in terms of resistance to thorns through the sidewall, but I guess that won't bother too many of you that much! They also make a hell of a noise if you really have to stamp on the anchors on tarmac - many a pedestrian has leapt out of my way under heavy braking - they squeal long before they lose grip!

I didn't know you could get them in 19... hmmm...

Dear All,

I have been following this and the other GG AT thread with interest.

I currently have GG AT's and got them about 18 months ago. They have been okay, quiet, wear well, do most things fairly well. I have only struggled once in deep mud (not unexpected for an AT tyre) and on greasy roundabouts (albeit only when driven enthusiastically)

Now that the tyre labels are here, my thoughts are that the AT's don't seem to do themselves any favours :-

Tyre Fuel Wet Grip Noise Mountain/Snowflake

Wintrac 4 Extreme/C/E/71/Yes
Pirelli Ice & Snow/E/C/72/Yes
Duratrac/E/E/74/Yes
Pirelli ATR/E/C/71
GG AT/F/F/74
Pirelli Scorpion Zero/E?C/72

I am considering a winter tyre and from the above, it would seem to me, that the Duratrac is a good option, no worse than a Scorp Zero for Fuel and as good as a Wintrac 4 Extreme for Wet Grip.

Does the fact that the Duratrac has a Mountain/Snowflake symbol, make it a "proper" winter tyre, with the right compound rubber for low temperatures ?

The GGAT's with a Double F ( Shocked ) look like a bit of a compromise ?

Rik

Windy, were did you get the data for the Pirelli ATR?

There isn't any showing on the Pirelli UK website, but on the German version is shows B for both fuel and wet grip and 72 db for noise.

My understanding is that the mountain/snowflake is the universal sign (for the EU anyway) that a tyre has met the minimum standards required for cold temperatures, snow and ice.

Personally, I'd doubt if the Duratracs would be a good as the "on road" Goodyear winter tyre, on tarmac. However, on deep fresh snow, they might be better.

One things for sure, all on road winter tyres that I know off are rubbish on mud. I've witnessed first hand the Duratrac's driving through mud and they're good Thumbs Up

I think the graphic shown against ATR is a generic one.

If you go further into both the UK and German sites and select a tyre size. it shows E / C

I have put a copy in my gallery

I must admit I couldn't find the right tyre size, but I wouldn't have thought tyre size would make that much difference

Thumbs Up I see, that's for a 265 70 16. Obviously it must vary depending on size, but of course that would be the same for all brands.

In real life, I think the Duratrac looks more aggresive than photos would have you think. So I'm surpised to see how good it rates.

But tyre technology has moved on and looking at the relatively tame tread pattern on the Pirelli ATR, I'd never have believed that it is as good off road as it is.

I'm looking forward to hearing how Dunc finds the mpg in comparison to the Wrangler HP's. If it's not much worse, I'd consider a set of Duratracs to use in the winter.

You will all see over the months how this tyre labeling is a load of old cod, and I would guess a few punch-up's with the big boys.

It will be interesting to see how it develops.

If they subsequently change the ratings, it will make a mockery of the whole thing.

It's a mine field Twisted Evil and so far we are seeing some very interesting labeling to put one in front of another.

And when "nobby-no-nuts" get's his/her hands on it.................. Rolling with laughter

Have a look at some of the labeling on import budget tyres...........looks like they must be the best in the world. NOT !

Going back to Windy Corner's post. Are the ratings for the GG AT correct? Or have GG purposely given the AT the 2nd from worst rating for fuel consumption and wet grip? Can't see why they would do that Confused .

That's of course assuming that GG rated the AT themselves, rather than giving it to another tyre company to test (as per an earlier post from AJS).

If you can't accurately compare like with like, then it's worthless!
