starting to lean towards the Duratec at the moment - as they will be on permanent in the winter and maybe summer if they are quiet, I just wonder what the impact on Mpg will be - currently enjoying 28mpg in the D4 compared with 22 in the D3 with roof rack and coopers etc Duncan

And all this is tested with new tyres I presume?
I'd love to see the tests re-run with 3mm of tread left. Both wet grip and noise...

they would be replaced well before 3mm. at that level it defeats the purpose of AT/MT type tyres. Duncan

I agree, although I'm sure Andy replaces a lot of tyres with a lot less tread than that...
OK same question though but with half the tread left compared to new? I've been very happy with two sets of ATRs but they move a lot less water out of the way once big blocks on the shoulder wear away.
Have just sold my MT/Rs and also thinking of Duratracs to replace the ATRs as I'm doing a lot less motorway miles than I was in the D3 and can't be bothered with swapping wheels over.

Tbh and not slating the GG's but I find them to be a lot louder than standard tyres, I know they are AT's but cant understand why some people say that they are as silent as normal scorpions.
They are wearing pretty well though.
I have not been able to try scorpion ATR'S so cant compare the two

If I had to choose between the Pirelli ATR or the Goodyear Duratrac in 255/55x19 my choice would be Duratrac 100%.
I do think the Duratrac is going to be a strong contender to the General AT, but the high price will steer some to General AT, of the two the General AT would be my choice as it's road manners will be better.
These are my choices, will leave it upto you to decide what floats your boat.

That's both a great price and a wise decision (IMO). Knowing how you liked the ST's and STT's, I think the Duratracs will be more "up your street". I can also vouch for how tough the Duratracs are off-road.
The Duratrac is the only mountain /snowflake rated tyre that I know off, that can cope with mud. My only experience in a D3 with winter tyres off-road was with Vredestein Wintracs and they clogged up almost instantly and the mud was relatively "thin". Others here have different brands of winter tyres and reported the same. It's this reason that has always stopped me from fitting winter tyres on my D3.
I'll be very interested to see how you get on with MPG on the motorway and if the increase in noise is very noticeable. If it's good I'll be tempted to get a set for winter use. My only reservation being that Goodyear only give them a 2/5 rating on wet tarmac.

I find them [DuraTrac] way, way better than the MT/R I have been running in the wet, but they are still an off-road biased tyre so they they're not perfect.
LT, I am hesitant to say I wouldnt worry, as it's only my opinion, but I find them sure-footed and actually quite grippy in the wet. D3 HSE V8...

Thanks Mossy, that's helpful to know. I've ran Goodyear MTR's as well (I only just sold them to KP as I found that my ATR's would get me everywhere I want to go) and yes they are pretty dire on wet roads and braking distances. But then that's not what they were designed to do.
I drive over 20k miles pa on road (probably 70+% of that on motorways) so I really need a good road tyre, but at least once a week I venture off road. The mpg is also important to me. So far the best "compromise" for me is the Pirelli ATR. But I'd also like the "winter" capability of the Duratrac. Which makes me think I might consider a set to use for the 3-4 months of winter and the ATR's the rest of the year.
Just a good excuse to buy more tyres really, I'm down to just two full sets for the D3 now and I'm getting withdrawal symptons. I need some counselling from DSL

Price is including VAT as they always give a Total Price quotation. I didnt confirm at the time but they have never quoted me excluding VAT Duncan
