I have now discovered the holes, although I cannot feel the wiring, so I still (think) I need to get behind these panels don't I?? Joined the BMWX5 45e group

That link I posted has a good photo of where the wire will be if you can get to it with the panel on.
If its the footwell we are still talking about then you will find the wiring and plug will be folded back on the loom and taped up ... On the passenger one drop the lower glovebox ala like accessing fuses and you can find it that way. For the drivers side drop down the panel below the steering wheel for access .
Not easy I know but once you have located the plugs that are wrapped in foam you are 80% there tbh....

Can I get to the wire through the hole I make if I don't take the panel off, it seems from your pictures the wire is covered in foam at the other end of the door attached to the loom with tape which would make it difficult?
Pete,
Just remove the lower two screws in the panel and you'll have enough room to fish out the loom behind it. If your right arm is too muscular from, ahem, "working out", get wife or small child to assist...Time flies like an arrow; fruit flies like a banana

is possible ... but maybe the inherent rigidity of the panel is otherwise difficult .. but see the connection is relatively close to the bottom so as to remove some staples you get it .... but I think removing the panel, not very complicated (it is only the first ... the second you go fast and the 4th, you will do it blindfolded) will make it much easier to remove the hole and do it well without going over and break ...and yes, the wire is there, is where you see in the pictures...
good luck
