Checked mine today due to poor performance / economy and most of all black smoke.
Guess what I found ......

Hi sm,
I'm sorry, but that's not clean. Look at the entrance hole to the sensor. Having said that, be very careful in cleaning this area. The Bearded Dragon

I agree, but I read in the thread earlier not to poke anything down the hole in case of damage?
I'll do it again as it's an easy job and be careful.

Big difference
Mine was completely gunked up, hole filled in and even the hole from which it was withdrawn was partlally blocked after the sensor was removed. Cleaned with tissues and WD40. Had to twist up tissues to unblock the hole in the sensor, dodgy I know, but I figured it wasn't working anyway full of gunk
Anyways, prior to de-gunking I had all the classic signs of EGR failure (except the yellow light) - engine revs not rising willingly on cold starts, sluggish all the time, poor fuel consumption etc.
After cleaning its a lot better. Have to wait and see on the fuel consumption, performance much improved but still not crisp. Willing to cold start and pull away ok (well as cold as it gets in August ). I guess the EGRs are still on the way out, but not quite dead yet
I would love to blank them, but mines an 07. Waiting for Pete at BAS and his magic dongle!
Great tip tho, this has helped me a lot.

I cleaned mine at the weekend. Wasn't as dirty as some of the examples here, but definitely benefited from a good clean. The hole wasn't totally blocked, but bad enough to have an effect. I used MAF cleaner spray to do it.

MAP Clean
Just cleaned it today and couldn't believe the mess it was in. I wish these details had been in the thread about blanking the EGR's as I would have cleaned it when I blanked them about 2 months ago. I have a 05 plate and BAS remap with 72k on the clock. Just arrived back from France and had all the loss of power, Special Programs and other errors as detailed in the previous threads. Only really happened when we were going up hill with camping stuff in roof rack etc. But it was really dangerous as I had to keep pulling over the switch off/on the ignition.
The engine seems to rev much faster and smoother and the mpg has gone from 22 to 34 - but I've only tested it for about 3-4 miles, so that can't be right?!
Here's hoping that it has sorted out the loss of power and I am still bewildered to think that my mechanic has not done this previously when he serviced it - if it really has this much affect on performance and will stop the engine cutting out?! Looking at the amount of gunk on the sensor I don't think it has ever been cleaned since I had the vehicle or does it really build up this quickly?
Again thanks for DISCO3 and all the people that post this information - I really appreciate it!! Do I win a prize for the most gunkiest sensor?

Special program's off ....relief
This seems to have fixed a very dangerous problem,
Why don't dealers do this in services?
Drove at freeway speeds today after for 2 hours after cleaning ...no problems

Just done mine - MY08, 97k on the clock - seems pretty clean in comparison to others on this thread so I'm assuming it's been done in the past (only had it 7 weeks). It's something I'll keep a regular eye on in future so thanks for the tip.

Hello gents,
I'm new to the forum but have been following for a while now.
I'm still on the look out for a disco 3 but all I have managed to find are ropey farmers vehicles within my area at the moment( no offence to the farmers).
So as it stands I still have my old faithful 300tdi auto.
I'm replying to this thread as I don't see that any one has gone any further in to cleaning the rest of the induction system, and for those whom have owned the 300 tdi etc will know that the EGR on this engine gives all sorts of trouble unless removed, I for one had a severely blocked induction chamber and on cleaning the Entire induction system, blanking the EGR, and adding silicone hoses, the disco now runs perfectly, bar the odd leak!.
So, my question is has any one gone this far, am I missing some thing in terms or warranty by doing this?, or have I missed the thread in my searches.
I would have thought that just cleaning the sensor and removing the egr(s) was just the beginning, that further improvement could be made by carrying out the work previously mentioned on my 300tdi.
I hope this makes sense gentlemen, I have learnt so much by reading the different threads I'm already building a list of jobs to do when I finally track down the disco I want, and counting the cash my local dealers WONT be getting.
Great forum gents and I look forward to learning more.

MAP Sensor Gunge
Hi. First post & first Picture. 54 (04) D3 2.7 HSE 150000miles.
MAP sensor before and after cleaning. Not yet tested.
Done 3000 miles in 4½ months using 2sO, Averaging 25.07mpg. Brim to brim. Computer 26.2mpg. Don't think previous owner/s used any additives. FSH (although I think the last oil change was missed as the oil was rather black and the sump guard bolts were tightened to over 100 ft.lbs.
Hole was blocked. Cleaned with carb cleaner spray (liquid trickled in).
Andy.

Will have a look at mine again as it's been 30k miles, all of that with the EGRs blanked. Expecting them to be nice and clean.

After two and a half years and 30'000 miles since last cleaning it, mine looks like this -
EGR blanking certainly helps to keep the innards clean Clive
