Well the garage have spent all day taking it off and have put the new one on,just got to put a few things back together and its done. They did it by tilting the gearbox bit of a fiddle but all done The flexi part had split due to the bracket breaking that fits on the gearbox. dont know why that broke.Do you think its worth repairing the old pipe and putting it up for sale

Hi Mike is it ever worth just replacing the crossover pipe when the car gets to a certain age or milage, or do you just wait for it to fail
Do they always end up failing or do some never fail?
I understand when it fails it can damage other wiring etc...

Thanks Mikey is it much of a job to remove an auto gearbox? have done a search but can not find what i am looking for.Thanks.
If its an auto, I would be looking at taking the body off. Mush easier than arsing around with the auto box, which weighs in at 125kg... And would need drained and refilled
Its not that big a job to lift the body, can have it off in around 3-4 hours...

What of a design engineer though that would be a good idea? Makes me long for the days of my A series engine - though not admittedly the Marina it came attached to.
Plenty of fiddly jobs around an A series but removing a mini attached to it is easier granted 2004 Discovery 2 Td5 Landmark

The flexi joint on my 320d went on the front pipe.
I purchased a flexi joint on its own for £12.00 off Ebay - various diameters and lengths are available.
After marking the positions of flexi against the pipes at both ends, i cut the old flexi off with a grinder.
I got a garage to weld the new flexi on (freebie as he was a mate).
The repaired item has been on for over 2 years now without issue. As long as the correct brackets are fixed i don't think there will be an issue.
Looking at pictures of a D3 crossover pipe, i notice that the flexible sections are indeed welded on to the lengths of the crossover pipe.
The flexi's available are generally the braided type but i would have no hesitation using these as the braid covers a steel section, however, having looked on ebay, stainless 'rigid' flexible sections are also available - any good exhaust supplier / manufacturer should be available to supply.
My observations only, and if i was i a similar situation i would do the above. There would be a considerable cost saving

Looks a right b**ch, I was told by my local indie that these pipes fail when the gearbox is removed and the brackets are not secured during the refit as it is apparently a total b**tard to get the bolts back in, the resultant vibration causes the flexis to fail. They do not fail due to rust, this is only what I have been told BTW so I stand to be corrected Owning a Discovery 3 is like dating a model.. a firm body and shape, wow.. the ride is fantastic > for this your wallet can take a pounding and you worry about being deflated at any time...
