You cannot start it by shorting wires, it uses a CAN-BUS system, which a coded pulsed voltage controlled by the cars various electronic systems.
Once the FBH has 3 'failed starts' it locks out and will not operate until 'unlocked'
It can be 'forced' to start either with a MSV Faultmate, or teh LR diagnostic system (IDS), some indies have access to this, some folk on here have a Faultmate (Wiggs is one) Never get mad - get even !!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but could it be you can also unlock it in combination with a 1533 timer and fuse trick? Discovery 3 TDV6 HSE java black (in Europe)

Update on my FBH troubles.
I got a Faltmate to clear faults. This done the job very easily & quickly. From inside of the car
But I had to clear the faults, probably well over 30 times. All the same fault = component failure.
Done what I read in the forms and put redex in tank. Thanks guys
If I tried the dealer, they would probably not have the time or the inclination to clear all these fault codes. There answer would be a new FBH.
Using the Faltmate to check FBH.
• Get in car plug in FM.
• Clear faults.
• Turn on engine.
• 45 seconds later FBH would try to start.
• After another 30 seconds check FM for fault codes. If no faults reported FBH is working. If there is fault code reported, clear and start again.
• All from inside the car, no crawling under front wings, or burning fingers.
• There is no way I would have been under the bonnet pulling fuses that amount of times.
Now after all these start-ups it never fails. Thinking of a timer now that I have heat.

Hello,
does anyone know where the red cable (W_Bus) on the Webasto FBH plug comes from?
Does anyone have a wiring diagram ?

LX0850 -
It seems to be the wire that used to control the FBH from the radio on earlier models - sadly now removed by software updates carried out and deleted on newer models. If you wait for it to go wrong - it's bound to oblige

She's gone, no more warm toes and MPG on the floor
So I ordered a cheap VAG USB/OBDII lead from the "usual" supplier. I'm bothered about a couple of things with IanNP's wiring of the thing to use the Webasto diagnostic software.
I see from the wiring diagram for the looms to be used to diagnose FBH problems that there is a 12V supply into the USB/OBDII plug. Is this safe, as surely 12V going into the laptop's USB would fry it?
Also, it looks like there is no need to make up a new FBH connector, as the diagram shows that the cables are just looped through it to a new connector incorporating the red cable for the W-Bus. Does this mean I could just leave the original FBH connector in situ, and make a connection from the OBDII to pin 2 on the FBH connector for the W-Bus cable?
I'm just waiting for my cheap OBDII cable coming, and I can start on my blinking FBH. Can't wait to get into it and do something useful with my mobile computer network as BBS SPY once described the D3.
Anybody got any thoughts
Ta,
Alan.

Alan,
The 12v powers the electronics in the module, its does not feed power into the USB bus.
You can add a cable into pin 2 of the connector and use this for the software when required, make sure you insulate it if you leave it unterminated as it has voltage/data on it.
When using the software make sure the car is a sleep and you do not open/shut doors as this will cause the FBH to get shut down by the car.

Cheers Ian.
What's the purpose of making up the wee loom that IanNP describes? It seems to just involve more work If you wait for it to go wrong - it's bound to oblige

If you want to look at whats on the CAN bus it lets you connect into it with an analyser but other than that, you don't need it.
Also it you want to add a 1533 timer later you also need the wire at pin 2 so ita handy to have it wired.
Ian.

That's made things a lot clearer - and a lot simpler with just 3 connections to make
Is there a source for a pin to add to terminal 2 on the FBH plug - just to make it nice and permanent

Yes, you can get a connection pin that will work (not actually the correct pin) from RS components but you need to buy a bag of 100.
Other option, is from ebay seller Sarkblue who also does the timer. Do an ebay search for webasto and you will get him.
