-15 here this morning and guess what, the FBH decides not to fire up for the first time ever .
Engine was a pig to start, fired first time then immediately stopped, repeated this eight times before it would continue running. Appeared to run on three cylinders for a few seconds (at about 400 RPM) before normal service was resumed. Let it tick over for twenty minutes before I set off, engine still not up to temperature at end of journey (6 miles).
FBH fired up for return journey (outside temp -11), engine reached normal temp after about 2 miles. About 10mins after return decided to investigate why the airbag warning light is showing (also today for the first time), started the engine (temp -12) and guess what? the FBH not working again.
Anyone any ideas?

Are you driving my car? FBH not working despite -11 and SRS airbag light on! Guy Salmon reckon the SRS light is down to the drivers seatbelt pre-tensioner but the FBH I cannot solve yet. Getting it booked in for next week. Of course it is just out of warranty.....
Read somewhere on here that a poor battery will prevent the FBH starting so I'm going to stick the jump leads on from the wife's (new) car to check for that.

I have just trawled through some past posts on FBH. Read that climate control needs to be switched on for FBH to work.
Just remembered I switched the CC off so that I could hear if the FBH was working
Been down to car (now -12) switched on CC, started engine, FBH fired up nicely.
Airbag warning light still on though

Just read that if the FBH control receives a "crash" signal from the SRS control module that it shuts down. Off to GS then..........

Many thanks for your replies. I am now at a compete loss So it will have to be a visit to the Stealers, interestingly though, I have had a recall letter from Stratstones (Stockton) for an 'urgent' programme enhancement ? The only involvment I had with them was when they replaced both my EGR valves last year on my 54 plate disco, so I might just be cheeky and see if they will clear any apparent faults on the FBH whilst they are updating the files !!!
Regards to you all and happy new year !
Matt
If you live near a forum member who has a Faultmate they will be able to prime it for you, this might do the trick. After it has been primed the first time it fires up will produce a LOT of smoke so you will know if its working or not. Drop Pete (BAS) or Wiggs a pm, they are both forum sponsors who maybe able to help you out for less than the stealer. Good luck Club Exped trailer

Dear all;
Many thanks for sharing your experiences and good advice. I am going to see if Stratstones will do a 'clear' job on any faults when they do some recall work and see how we go from there. If it still doesnt work its in for a thrashing !!!!

I had my SRS light on recently. I advised the service people of this when I took it in for a service. They diagnosed that it needed a software update. If TFC or Wiggs can't do that for you, it may mean a return to the dealers. This MAY also correct your other symptoms.
Best Wishes,

Just visited LRC in Congleton to purchase roll bar bushes and enquired about the FBH at the same time. Literally two minutes later, 51 fault codes cleared. Drove about 1/4 mile and loads (and I mean loads!) of smoke from the FBH. Probably due to me priming it with a syringe!
Anyway, full heat is now restored and Disco 3 permagrin back in place.

Mine has worked OK from new
it seems to operate on ambient temp of 4 or 5 deg C....regardless of the Disco engine temp
(I witnessed this on a trip across France in sub-zero temps)
The vehicle warm up is very, very rapid
However I have taken note of not letting the fuel level going low BREXIT - done properly.

FBH question - Now confirmed |
|
During the software update at Stratstones Stockton, they very kindly run a diagnostic and found a number of faults registered, namely 'FBH locked out due to low fuel' after a chat with the service tech, I can confirm that for my particular D3 (MY 2004) if the FBH tries to run whilst the low fuel light is on on 2 or more occasions, it will lock out and need the faults clearing. I tried the usual fuse and disconnection trick without success. Bizarre I know I will have to ensure that during cold weather i do not let my tank run low, or alternatively I may invest in one of BBS's 'FaultMate' .
I also asked if they could enable the settings menu on my dash, after I fitted audio controls on the steering wheel. I believed that even though mine is a base spec that never had this, it was still possible to enable, however I was wrong. They did give it a try though.
Very good service from Stratstones of Stockton. Worth the 60 mile drive !
regards
Matt

slightly
Yep Stratstones Stockton do provide a very good service.
This was mainly down to the service manager Peter Munroe.
However, Peter has since left and is now service manager for Ripon Land Rover.
The service at RLR has now shot through the roof.
That man does an excellent job.
Think my FBH cann't be working correctly either.
Never had any exhaust smoke this year, even down to -11.
Going into RLR soon for its mot, so will have it checked out then. ...... always on the road less travelled 🚧

My FBH is also not working - very annoying in the -11℃ we had here.
It's in at the dealers next week so they can make it work. I did read posts on here describing the simple reset (take fuse out for 10 mins) and a longer reset procedure involving pressing the 'ignite' button - does anyone know where the ignite button is please? Thanks.

The flame button refers to those who have fitted the Webasto oval timer modification. I am going to have a go at this. Without this you have no control over the heater,
