Reliability issues (rant warning!)

I have had a fair few cars over the years and still have about 6 in the family at the moment. My D3 is the most unreliable beast I have ever had.

Easter 2007 - dealer says it was the drive belt for the HP fuel pump which died... I guess it could then also hit a fuel line directly above the turbo -as it was leaking fuel onto it. Towed from Cowra to dealer and with them for about 3 weeks while parts were shipped from UK. New fuel pump, new injectors, fuel lines, drive belt, etc. I guess I count myself lucky that it never caught fire at that time.

24,000km service - new front suspension parts (bushes). 36,000km new brakes - all front and rear rotors and pads. Ok - you could argue these are normal wear and tear.

This week - in for 60,000km service and to fix the farting A/C, another front end clunk, leaking battery and recent tapping noise from the engine bay under acceleration. Was told the A/C would take a day to fix (as they have to pull the whole dash out) and another day to fix front end/alignment/service, and that the tapping was the A/C. Well - got a call today advising that the tapping was the fuel pump! Won't arrive until tomorrow... won't be fixed until Tuesday. So another 6 days in the service dept...

I bought a BA XR6 in 2003 and it has done 105,000km... only problem - new brakes and a flat battery. Still have it and it is like new. I bought a Kia Carnival in 2001 and traded it in on the D3. I had over 120,000km on it and the only thing to go wrong with it was a gear lever linkage. I bought a Toyota Town Ace in 1993 and it had 170,000km on it - only problem with it was a flat battery at 7 years old! I also have 2 Alfas, a Lancer, a Telstar and a VW Superbug... the D3 is the most unreliable car of the lot. That is sad. Big Cry

I hope I feel better soon.

Rob

That's the price you pay for love ...............

My valve amps are just as unreliable ( and go BANG .. sometimes too ) , but I wouldn't
trade 'em for solid state.

The world of the besotted ...........

Ah - a lover of second-order distortion... I have lots of amps at my house too, but all are solid state. Vive la difference! Although I do love that fat, crunchy valve sound in guitar amps. Off to see the Brewster Brothers (ex Angels) tonight. Might drown my sorrows with some brews too. Crying or Very sad

Oh.. forgot to mention... at the 48,000km service, the (useless) apprentice working on my car managed to stuff the car alarm when replacing the broken rotary coupling in the steering column. I had to go back to the dealer, pick up loaner car and take spare key to dealer - in an attempt to get it working. Another 2 days in the service dept.

I can't think of any other car - which spends as much time at the dealer.

Permagrin has turned to a permafrown. Evil or Very Mad

Perhaps you should try another dealer. Having owned many LR's, they were all serviced at a dealership that I have build a relationship with the sales guys, and especially the service guys. You soon pick up which ones are on the ball, and passionate about the product.

Those are the dealerships stick to. Thumbs Up

Thanks Pierre... but the broken A/C was installed by the factory... as was the faulty fuel pumps. The dealership is just mopping up the mess. Really, for the price, the build quality should be much better. Don't get me wrong - when it is on song - most of the time - it is the best vehicle ever. Thumbs Up

Agreed Jonesy, but timelines for fixing sounds a bit much.

The ownership experience is enhanced by the right dealership, even when the chips are down, where as with the wrong one, you loose confidence, and get peeved off, and take everything as BS.

All good though mate. If you can stick it out with an Alfa, you can stick it out with the Disco. Rolling with laughter

OT - BTW, looked at a 159 2.2 JTS Selespeed over the weekend. What a nice car, with some of the most beautiful lines in car design IMHO at the moment. Thumbs Up

I think if you looked at why a D3 costs so much (made in a country with high wages, conversion rate from Pounds to AUD, luxury car tax, GST etc etc) you really aren't paying for much car. In fact it's probably close to a Kia.

If I had the sort of problems you are having I'd be dirty too, but 12 months into my D3 and it's given me nothing but faithful on and off road pleasure.

Mind you my first Subaru was a great car and I swore then i would never buy another brand of car, then i got a crap Subaru and probably won't go back to them.

PS. I have a Marshall ValveState 65W. It's supposed to sound just like a valve Amp, but it doesn't. On the other hand, the HMV stereo I inherited from my grandfather proudly display's a badge "Solid State" but I swear that sound comes from a Valve Amp. Once it's been on for 10 minutes or so it produces the most wonderful, warm sound. I still buy new release vinyl rather than CD - The latest was a limited edition John Butler Trio "Sunrise over Sea" Digitally remastered with 24 bit sound!

I can't help but love a stereo that is older than me, but still pumping out such beautiful sound!

Rob
All known issues but you have had more than your fair share of them
Re: the farting aircon; dealer doesn't know what he is doing. Rolling Eyes there is a new procedure for it just needs the centre console off. Alto did mine several months ago. Very quick job now.

Hehe - good one. Actually, I have not ever been stranded by an Alfa. I drove my Alfetta GTV 2000 from home to work every day from 1994 to 2003. That is about 40km each way - through some of Sydney's worst traffic spots.

I had the motor rebuilt not long after getting it and converted to electronic ignition. I think that made a big difference. The only problems I have had were a flat batter - roll started ok; dead clutch - drove without it (a big hairy in traffic!); and nothing much else!

Ah... I never finished that sentence! Rolling with laughter

I drove without the clutch - on the way home.. then drove to my Alfa repairer and had him replace it. Back in a day - parts in stock... none of this "no stock in Sydney, so we had to arrange for the part to be shipped from Melbourne (or UK on occasion! Shocked )"
