It is interesting to note that whenever sales figures are produced demonstrating that they match the best figures of the D3\4 years ...that this is still not good enough to some.
I think there is one issue that we also forget when it comes to comparing D5 sales with those of the earlier models - the marketplace. Back when the D3 ruled the roost, there weren't that many true 7-seaters available. Disco, XC90 (the old one), Q7 and a couple of the old clunky Japanese 4x4s. That was about it, really. These days there is much more choice for those who want a big 7-seater and there has been a social mood change away from big 4x4s as "safe school run cars": modern crossovers and the car-van thingies (VW Touran, for example) give all of the space, practicality and safety of a d3 without the off road bits, of course, but with much, much better fuel economy. My friend's Touran gives better mpg when fully loaded-up than I can get in my RRS downhill with the engine off!
It seems to me that for the D5 to be matching the earlier model's sales figures is anything but an indictment in the current climate. Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

If you read back through my posts about the D5 you’ll see that I’ve said a number of times that I’ve never ruled out the possibility that I might own one in the future and whilst I don’t like the deisgn, especially the rear, that wouldn’t be a deal beaker for me. My main negatives have always been the leg room, overall driving position, tail gate and shape of the load area.
I’ve always been happy for those who find that the D5 is well suited for their needs. 2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

I was typing with tongue in cheek of course . I'm still planning a warts and all report shortly ...as even for me, there are many, many likes .....but also some irritations.

Basically, if you want a bus, buy the D5, otherwise buy the RRS and enjoy a nicer driver, nicer interior, the possibility of superior performance with a greater engine choice and all of the off road ability.
Whilst the underpinnings were the same, the D3 was noticeable in its ability to go off road where the RRS1 couldn’t. I’ve first hand experience of this and seen the resulting damage.

Was this on the same tyre - one of the problems the RRS1 faced was that LR stuck it on a more tarmac oriented tyre than the Disco.
The ground clearance is much the same, from memory the approach angle is better on the Disco but the departure angle slightly better on the RRS1. The big issue with the RRS1 is the design decision to wrap the doors down to the cill where the D3's doors don't - hence why Discos have easy access to fit sliders where the RRS doesn't. The silly stick-on plastic bits at the bottom of the RRS's doors are prone to catching too but they clip on/off so no big issue there.
RRS2 and D5 share ground clearance to within a few mm and angles are as per the originals - RRS slightly worse at the front, slightly better at the rear.
Ultimate off road ability is a bit of a joke with these vehicles anyway - they all come on silly big shiny wheels with tiny sidewalls. All face the same problems of fitting smaller wheels/tyres too as they share brakes etc.
Watching some of the Aussie youtube videos of RRS, Discos etc doing serious off road trips, they all seem to be about the same in ability - the tyre is the key factor. Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

From memory the RRS1 had lower angles for Approach, Ramp and Departure in comparison. Lower profile tyres don't help off-road either. 2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

Zero D5's spotted in the last month, I think its 6 months since I've spotted one on the road.
Current LR dealership offers, for EOFY sales, have 5 years worth of free servicing and warranty, plus $2500 fuel card and 2 LR corporate tickets to the Invictus games.
Last week, I Watched a wholesale auction for a low mileage 2014 Discovery SE, it sold 15% above wholesale price. Several bidders really wanted that car.

I remember off-roading at Yarwell(?) and VA pulled the front valance of of his RRS as he attempted to climb a hill - he popped it back on and spent the rest of the day reversing up the hills! The D3's were fine. Disco 5 HSE Lux
