Because the Train Operating Companies are separate privately owned companies to Network Rail/Government (when it suits them) so there is no restriction on the pay scales for them.They can continue to rip off both the train traveller and the tax payer for consistently poor levels of service and hold the country to ransom to get their 100k.2011 D4 XS 305 MY12 - gone but not forgotten

I imagine their pensions are also 'above average' too.......
Same as the 'civil service'. Whilst looking for some part time/semi-retirement work I was advised to check out jobs on the Gov.UK website. There wasn't anything suitable for me but looking at some of the job roles and descriptions and 'weighting' them against other jobs that I know the salaries of, friends and families in similar roles, etc. I didn't think the wages were overly generous, more in the 'not too bad but private sector maybe a bit more' category. However, in the perks side the pension contribution for all of those advertised was "an average of 27% employer pension contribution" No wonder people work there 'for ever'.....

Not far different to a middle-grade pilot ("systems watcher"), but:
* Responsible for more passengers than on a 747;
* No co-pilot;
* Many more days worked per month than a long-haul pilot
but
* trains can stop in the event of a problem
* trains operate in only one physical dimension, not three
I'd class both jobs as ****ing boring and would need to be offered a lot more! I suppose the market decides the going rate but the railways is one area where automation should be easy. However, there are now several hundred years' worth of regulations to meet.

Why is it that people are really concerned about dog "droppings" but not horse:-

the lane I live on, a BOAT (Byway open to all traffic) normally has 2 or 3 horse deposits a day; I've never seen dog sh*t as the owners pick it up.

Car insurance.....
On holiday last week up in the North East, had a great time, dropped into Bridlington one day and was shunted in rear quite hard as I was stationary at traffic lights.
Other driver apologetic, admitted liability, swapped details and on our way. Next morning text message from his insurer admitting liability, etc. all straight forward.
My insurance (JLR - it's a company car) all straightforward and instead of a poxy Corsa or Fiesta we usually get when in for repairs I can get a 'JLR product or equivalent' as no fault and liability admitted.
Today I go to insure my own personal vehicle and pull up the historical quote and then remember I have to now report an 'accident' (for the next five years ). Duly do this, no affect on quote, etc. and go to pay.
Insurance is 'declined' and chat bot thing opens but I get a real person. They tell me I haven't filled out my details correctly as I have an 'admitted fault liability accident' against me and then give my car reg' but his insurer details and I must therefore get written 'evidence' from my private car insurer (but that isn't my private car ) before they will cover me (and they tell me it will be the same if I go elsewhere now as it's "on the system"....... ). All paths led to "computer says noooooo"
More hassle to sort out....

Years ago I was rear ended at a roundabout. When I went to reinsure a few months later, the quote was big so I queried it. They told me that as the other party to the non-fault accident still hadn't done the paperwork, the system still classed it as a fault claim. It was only when I chased them up and get them to send in the forms that the insurers changed it to non-fault.
I'd guess that similar is happening here - because it's so recent, the other person's insurers haven't paid up yet and so yours consider it to be a fault claim.Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

Due to the diet and metabolism dog faeces almost certainly contain bacteria and other pathogens that can be injurious to humans wheras horse faeces if deposited by a generally healthy horse will have nothing that would cause harm due to their herbivour diet.
However it is an offence to deposit anything on the highway that could be a hazard to road users so strictly speaking an owner that fails to clean up after their horse is comitting an offence. Like many laws unless someone is there at the time who can deal with the crime how could it be prosecuted?A visitor from the dark side, my other vehicle is an is still an EV. Strictly speaking its SWMBO.

Still going through but will come out as no fault claim.
However, I'm still going to be stung on insurance renewal. Played around on configurator and (in round numbers) initial insurance details had my quote at £380. With a declared accident it jumped to £640 ( , I've had about 30 years accident free and at least 25 years clean licence). Put in that I had a settled 'no fault' accident and its £480. Sitting, minding my own business with some incompetent running into back of me is going to cost me a hundred quid in this year alone. And I have to declare it for the next five years
