I think this would be a something that Watchdog would like to get their teeth into. It looks like there are many examples. So why not contact them to see if they are interested in taking it up with Land Rover.

Watchdog is on my plan if I can't get it sorted with stratstone. I have been contacted by another family who are in exactly the same position and if I can make contact with others it will put us in a stronger position. Stratstone have had a formal letter under the sale of goods act so waiting for a response before moving to the next step

Jaguar LandRover customer services aren't that good or even effective...to serve the customer.
I had an issue with my Jaguar this year that I was advised to contact them about....it came to nought.
They appear to deal with things on a strict agenda that doesn't escalate things to the people who could actually do something. Frustrating.
On a number of repeat discussions the advisor told me to contact the supplier (so in effect I was dealing with a component issue direct with Jaguars supplier)....this I did.
On the first call to thier UK office I got the UK managing director - who instructed me to phone an individual OEM parts manager...this I did.
This caused a storm in Jaguar...
I also wrote to higher managers in Jaguar to get past customer services...
The combination of both did the trick....the parts in question were swapped out FOC + the installation cost.
I suggest if you get caught up in the log-jam start writing letters & start from the top...
State facts, use photios, quote part numbers...structure your letter in a way that shows the anomaly you have come up against.
It may yield results.
The busted crankshaft issue to me is puzzling...
1) If there was a batch manufacturing issue (on a specific set of dates)......materials, heat treatment, machining etc
Or
2) It could be a design issue.....highly unlikely
Or
3) a totally ok crankshaft....that is subjected to some engine use issue in its "life" that finds the weak spot in the metal....to me if the failure mode was similar or the same on each one it would take a materials engineer back to maybe (1) or possibly (2)
I would have thought that this engine being shared design & major component wise with Peuogot, Jaguar, Ford & maybe Citroên....that weaknesses of flaws with design or manufacture (especially with materials or heat treatment) they would have been found & dealt withBREXIT - done properly.
Right now ...We need Government - not Politics
Save the Dipstick Flagbearer-keep it simple, less likely to fail campaign-agenda items:Starting Handles, Acetylene Lamps.
Founder: Dipsticks-R-Us Inc
D3 HSE-perfectly formed, passenger friendly...has real DIPSTICK
Jag XK-but sadly no DIPSTICK...HUGE design fault
FL2 has DIPSTICK..."real comfort in rear seats"
VW Golf wondermobile (?)..has real DIPSTICK
Morris Minor..original DIPSTICK technology..and a real KEY.

Perhaps we need to get all this information regarding failures correlated in one place - is it just the Discovery or does it effect Citroen, Range Rover, ford erc as well. Potentially it could destroy the residual values on these vehicles if Land Rover walk away from the perceived issue.
A nervous disco 4 owner - although I absolutely love my D4 Which although still under manufacturer warranty, perhaps it's time to jump ship and get something else maybe a Jeep Grand Cherokee
.
Food for thought

Title Crankshaft/Crankshaft Bearing Concerns - TDv6 Diesel Engine
Category Engine
Last modified 06-May-2014 00:00:00
Symptom 499000 Basic Engine
Content
Issue:
Crankshaft/crankshaft bearing failure - TDv6 Diesel Engine.
Cause:
Low incidence of crankshaft failure are being encountered, caused mainly by incorrect location of the main bearing shells during assembly, or through rotation of the shells during normal use. A new procedure has been implemented to ensure:
- more rapid resolution of customer concerns, and
- greater visibility of failure modes in order to improve repair process and parts delivery.
Action:
For any suspected crankshaft/bearing failure, please contact your local Dealer Technical Supportor FRED team for details of the enhanced customer handling procedure.
The list below summarises typical symptoms of crankshaft/bearing failure, but please contact your DTS/FRED team if in any doubt as they will be pleased to offer assistance:
· Crankshaft is seized, engine cannot be turned either via starter motor or crankshaft pulley bolt.
· Oil sump or engine cylinder block is holed, with oil leakage and/or metallic debris found on engine under-tray.
· Engine makes a loud rumbling/knocking sound when running which worsens as the engine is placed under load. The engine oil pressure warning light may flash or be continuously illuminated, especially at low engine speeds.
I've said this numerous times now but as unfortunate as this is ...don't get hysterical over numbers of failures as they are still tiny compared to the number of engines out there and within the average% of all engine failures.
With the above TSB you should be able to go to LR and plead your case as it is a recognised reason for failure. You have to meet their criteria though which can diminish beyond warranty and more especially if your vehicle hasn't a LRFSH. Still worth pushing for as much as you can but the older the motor the more realistic you have to be.21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021
