As far as I am aware, this is the biggest LR forums for the Discovery. I wonder why they didn't use this resource for VOC feedback?
Interestingly my daughters school is awash with Discoverys, the yummy mummys being a key market. When you see the kids clobber being unloaded or the dogs in the boot, the key feature in use is the slpit tailgate. It also fits in so well with their / our lifestyles.
I was planning to buy a new D5 this year but I'm now reconsidering it. It is such a useful feature that it seems such a shame that the designers don't understand how unique and valuable it is.D4 HSE EU6 (Known as Jeeves)

Thinking sales are more important than good design is a very short term view. It only works until people realise there's nothing special about your product. Then it's only about price.
In the words of SHMBO when we went to look at the DS... "why would I buy an LR if it looks like every other car around?" I didn't have an answer.

My ten pence worth is that JLR are not defining the individual models enough.... For the average punter the Evoque, DS and RRS are all very similar now in style ..especially the front...even down to the tear drop rear lights etc
Looking at those pictures it could be my RRS..... For those worrying about the rams lifting the tailgate panic ye not...the boot lid you will find is plastic! Mine is and it works perfectly...

I was just about to post a ponder whether these automated struts would have enough extra oomph in them to deal with the addition of a rear ladder (my D4 gas struts didn't...) but then reading that it is a plastic unit... Sounds like it could be problematic mounting a ladder onto it possibly?
I am still in the 'positive' camp overall but as I've said before, it's going to need to be able to handle an expedition rack and ladder for me...D4 XS, gone, much loved, never forgotten

Good point about car parks. I took our disco sport out the other day and had to park up against a brick wall. I needed to get something out of the boot so had to park well out of the space to allow for opening the tailgate. Then back into the car to reverse back into the space. D5 owners will have to get used to nosing into car parking spaces!
Personally, I preferred it when each model looked distinctably different. I struggle to tell them apart now, they all look like different sized versions of the same car.As you slide down the banister of life

What an unfortunate abomination at the rear end. It isn't the same problem as other MPVs as has been suggested. If you buy a Galaxy et al your children enter through the rear passenger doors, not the boot. The boot of most MPVs is hardly ever opened because with 7 seats up there is no boot space in them anyway.
I suspect there are more current Disco owners with 2 or more dogs than there are with 3 or more children. Buyers like to carry stuff in the back of Discos that don't need to be in seats.
It's a brave decision to remove the singular most defining feature of a vehicle.
It will be a great vehicle I'm sure, and it will sell well. Personally all it means to me is the unique features are gone, so when the time comes for me it has to hold its own against all the other generic stuff available if I'm to buy one. What that actually means is that rather than being the default choice, it just becomes another choice.

Yes, I carry a long (overhanging touring kayak on mine) and admittedly I have to hold the tailgate to access anything in the boot.
But with the D5 tailgate (by the looks of it) there ain't a hope in hell chance of opening it past a few inches and getting to anything.
Have we thought .... maybe McGovern is a genius?
As well as being a tailgate, maybe it also duals up as an air brake?
Imagine .... hammering around the Nurburgring you need to make a sudden stop ... lift off, brake hard and voila, the tailgate throws itself open and it comes to a stop within 10 meters.
It's ok, you won't loose the concrete slabs or three piece suite in the back (as you won't be carrying any) but certainly you won't loose any of the baby toys or grocery bags as they'll all now be with you on the front seat!

I managed just fine, just as I did with my previous myriad of regular estate cars. When I got the D4, I couldn't believe what I'd been missing out on for the previous 35 years!
If I were accepting of moving back to a ordinary estate car / MPV, then there are a lot of much cheaper ways of achieving the same thing than paying top dollar for a LR badged one.2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2
